Electric fan in a 1998 XJ, can't say that I have done that.

However, in general;

Pro:

Control cooling with switch in cab
gain a little additional HP
allows you to be a little more creative with space under hood

Con:

Noise of fan
Expense - Couple hundred $$ unless you do Ford Taurus conversion

Are talking about running two factory electric fans? I tried it with two of the later model fans on my 95 XJ. Overheated almost immediately on the highway and would on the trail too. I have all new cooling system. The one fan was on a Becool thermostat controller and the other was factory wired. I swapped back to the clutch fan and shroud and it worked great.

I would love to run a Taurus fan, but my setup will not work with that size fan (winch behind bumper and under radiator).

usually a good mechanical fan moves more air. Used to run a Taurus fan. It worked fine. Wasn't worth the hassle. Forgot to turn it off whilest in a mud hole and it cooked the fan.

If you have a clutch fan already, you don't gain too much by going to an electric fan.

Overheated almost immediately on the highway
You had other issues then. At Hwy speeds, fan isn't even necessary.

i disagree. the increase power is incredible. I rode in my friends rig that is very mechanically similar to my own and the difference in power is amazing! low end torque is much better with the electric fan. throttle response, in my opinion was also better. Im throwing an electric fan into my rig asap.

I was told by Flex-a-Lite that i could run just one 14" fan with a thermostat. do yall think both will be needed meaning the stock electrical and after market.

Your radiator is only 11" tall.

I run a single be-cool elec fan, no shroud, no thermostat, on-off toggle where I can reach it. On the trails its on all the time, 4.7 stroker motor runs cool, noise is not so much of a bother, on the road I can switch it off becuz like is said above, on the road the fan is barely needed. I put this in as part of a build up after a crash smashed my stock clutch fan.. If you have a good clutch fan and shroud, why spend money on something that wont work any better ? You might gain a little power but cant you find an aluminum bladed fan to replace the stock steel fan if you are worried about losing a few hp spinning the heavy steel fan ?
