: Fuel Level Gauge
darkstar 11-13-2008, 08:13 PM I'm trying to figure out a fuel guage for my project. Right off the bat I'm finding the info in the ETM confusing...
It seems to contradict itself. it says that when the level is low the resistance is 245 ohms, and when the tank is full the resistance is 19 ohms. OK, fine. then it goes on to say the warning light goes on when the resistance falls below 25 ohms. WHAT? that makes no sense...
Even assuming the range is 19 to 245, I haven't been able to find an aftermarket gauge anywhere near that range. I was hoping I could find something that would work, or something where I could wire a pot inline to tweak it, but it doesn't look like anything is out there. I really don't want to install a new sender at this point.
PT suggested a defender gauge... Rovers north has one for a 97 that should work, but they want $260 for it. $260!!!
They have one for a 93 that's around $90. still highway robbery, but I would pay it if I could be sure it works. They can't tell me one way or the other, and the part is non-returnable. Fawk.
Anyone shed some light on this situation? or sell me a defender gauge for a reasonable price?

I finally found myself in a position where I could do some looking for a gauge for you.
Autometer lists several that have inputs of 240 ohms full, 33 empty starting at about $40.
I'll try to take a look at some old fuel pump assemblies to ensure that the Defender sender is similar enough to that of the Disco for them to be interchangeable. Maybe empirical measurements will satisfy the naysayers, rather than relying upon potentially faulty manufacturer data/guidance.

They're now called DMMs, old-timer :flipoff2::laughing:
(and Alex is afraid of electrons, he told me so!)

I know..think it will be close enough? my fuel cell is small, I would like for it to be accurate when its low, and it seems as though 33 empty vs 19 emtpy won't be that accurate.
then again, I'm probably deluding myself thinking a defender guage will be accurate even if its "designed" for the correct range.
PTSchram 11-14-2008, 07:21 AM Dude! Bend the float so that when it's at 33 ohms, it's empty. To be honest, I'm more than a little surprised we get the accuracy we do with such ranges.

Crap, that's right.....I still like my analog VOM, thanks. Don't make me get the wooden cased, tube powered one down off the shelf!

I'll give it a try. worst case scenario I wasted $30 on a gauge I can't use.
HandBuilt 11-14-2008, 09:59 AM I use a VDO fuel gauge with 240 ohm to 33 ohm range, works great but reads upside down (empty means full, but pretty accurate otherwise). I think I have IIA fuel level senders in the tank, though, and they have an inverse range to the ones from a III/later Land-Rover IIRC. I really can't remember if the VDO needs 240 ohms to read empty or full, but based on how they are listed in the catalog, they are inverse to the others and they should work fine. I don't think a few ohm diff. will throw off the fuel gauge reading too much.
There is info on D90:

HandBuilt 11-14-2008, 10:06 AM Darkstar, I just remembered, I have a spare one left over from a boat repower, I think it's the same range, yours for the price of shipping if you want it - it's old, but it's VDO.
pendy 11-14-2008, 10:13 AM I have a used defender one for 60 LOL:flipoff2:
HandBuilt 11-14-2008, 10:32 AM Choice is obvious :flipoff2:
darkstar 11-14-2008, 12:34 PM hmm. I thought I replied to this a couple of hours ago.. Guess I forgot to hit Post.
I'm going to buy the autometer guage that matches the rest of the guages I got, and see if it works. If it doesn't I'm out $30 and will examine the above options. it will be a touch choice for sure.

I'll send you my shopboy's "payday" gauge for cheap. It's a stick! To operate, open tank, dip stick, remove, replace cap.
