I just went up Friday night and camped. Hiked down to Winch hill #3 and watched the rigs on Saturday. Lots of dust and delays (like usual) The guys on Winch Hill #5 got quite a workout as there was several "dead' rigs that had to be winched or tugged the whole way out Saturday afternoon.

My daughter and I worked Winch Hill 5 with some friends all day Friday until 11:30pm and then turned around and worked with RCRC preparing and serving Saturday Brunch. I cooked eggs and grilled burgers on the BBQ while Amanda served the hungry and hung-over guests.

I have participated on about 13 Treks and it was fun to volunteer and give a little back to CA4WDC :)

The turn out was down this year and base camp was really quite. The bar was is full swing serving something the called "Tahoe Blue". Man, did that drink kick my a$$!

2 replies... thanks guys. glad to hear ya'all had fun.

I didn't get to go for a couple reasons. first, my buddy

didn't get his motor/tranny/transfercase/axle swaps done

in time. (axle work took waaaaaaaay long) and neither

of us registered anyway. My junk is still a pile of sh_t,

er, parts...... and the little cj5 I have isn't even close to

able to running fordyce. so I wasn't even gonna try to.

anybody have any pics?

I swear, and anybody can mark these words, that NEXT

year, my cj7 will be there for ST. Sherpa.

Sherpa Rig, You could of run your "little CJ-5" as I saw a guy with CJ-5 and 31" tires coming through........only I was able was to walk faster than he could drive as he got high centered about every 10'. I finally left him at Winch Hill #4 . We was hung up pretty good and not having fun at that point!!! I was amazed at some of the rigs coming through that weren't nearly setup at all to run Fordyce especially the last day when the trail is full of ruts from all the other previous days runs. I'm sure they are all licking their "wounds" today. :D

My YJ made its inaugural run on Saturday's SWB run. Gotta give credit to Mike and his crew at Shaffer's in Carson City, as my rig was damn near perfect. All I lost was a banjo bolt in the rear caliper before winch hill four. No other problems and never had a problem with any of the hills! Most of the rigs with big problems seemed to be older CJ's with front 30's and one or two new TJ's with some troubles.

My two year old and my wife were really tired by the end of the day, since we drove out from Meadow Lake at 3:00 AM and got back at around 5:30 PM.

Good time overall, but never took any pics! I couldn't get my wife out of the rig to take the shots?

hey harry :flipoff2:

last year somebody working hill 2 and saw the p4x4 sticker on the back and wondered who I was so I thought I'd say high.

your spotter didn't like the line I took, and I hear he was even less happy when the ZJ Grocery Bus behind me took the same line and walked right up it too.

anyway I just unloaded the camera and I'll post a few in a bit.

mikecj5cj8....

what color was the cj5 with the 31's?

mikecj5cj8

It was dark green, Had some sort of writing/pinstriping on it. Guy driving it had kind off a straw hat on and he was by himself. When I saw him he looked like he had crawled out of a coal mine. He was having a rough day by the look on his face. I think his Jeep was locked front and rear but he had no ground clearance. Oh yeah, he had a broken shock mount in the rear passenger side.

That was probably Justin (3xtrem3). He has a Toyota pickup that was blue last year and green this year.

The ZJ was the :nuke: There were some disagreements  between some of the guys with regards to spotting rigs. We were tired of "hardcore" guys turning off their ARBs and then spitting out rocks for us. Not a big deal... until you have to get a bunch of flatfenders with 31s through the same spot. We were just tired and trying to keep people moving. You walked up it though, that is all that matters.

ok...i saw this guy come up winch hill 5. struggled a bit.
reason i asked was i am a cj 5...with 32's. i definately had clearance issues ALL day long. but i wasnt ready to lift it yet till i did this run to see what it did now, and what i wanted it to do in the future...since the weekend,...my list of things to do is pretty much endless.

SHERPA RIG and Dan-H, thanks for posting the Sierra Trek pictures. Kind of nostalgic. I last did the Trek in 93 then went to Spain and now living in TX. :( Be livin in AZ soon.

It was interesting to see full-fendered Jeeps again. I thought they didn’t exist in anymore. All I see these days are CJ’s with hood only, rock crawler hoods, hoods with tube flat fenders, etc. Noticed lots of tires that looked to be around 33. I had been gettin the impression that if you didn’t have at least 38.5 SX’s then you weren't shiat. The Jeep’s even have tubs that aren’t cutoff behind the front seats and bodies that aren’t narrowed by at least 10 inches. Don't get me wrong, I think they highly modified Jeeps are great.

And for all the comments on CJ-5’s. When I ran Trek in 93 my 79 CJ-5 304 had 33 BFG MT Moab edition, T-18/D20, Rancho 3” w/Con Fer shackles, 4.11, Detroit rear, TrueTrac front, M 10,000 winch and I don’t recall having any/many problems. At the time I considered it to be pretty well setup - by today’s standards it would be a stocker.

I even remember running the Rubicon in 87 with only a 3” lift, T-150, 3.73’s, an LS rear, 31” AT’s. Okay, I got hung up a few times and wasn’t exactly crawling but it was still fun. The following year when I ran it I had a T-18, and 32 MT’s it was much better to be crawling - at least that is what I considered it to be then - even with the 3.73’s.

Anyway Trek looked great and it would have been even  er if I had been there.

I remember the "grocery getter bus"... I was adjusting his Super 35 Ox right after the first water crossing. Apparently, it got out of adjustment and was not engaging fully. Ironically, minutes after adjusting his, my front Ox stopped engaging. It turned out to be a broken zip-tie, which was enough to throw off the tension in the cable which prevented the front locker from engaging. I discovered this right before winch hill #3.

While driving home in traffic, I realized that Dan-H from this site and JU, was the same guy I met on the trail and talked to in base camp. Funny how the mind wanders when stuck in traffic... :D

Ryan, I never made the connection :bender: I got about 3 hours sleep on the trail at the top of 4 on Friday nite, and about an hour sleep on thursday night so in main camp I was more or less a walking zombie being kept awake with meyers and coke.

good to meet you!

I'm surprised no one asked who the cutie was at winch hill 1 :grinpimp:

my sierra trek adventure

came in the short cut wednesday.....nothing exciting

my friends who were comming in through the front brough a stock CJ-5 with them.......the 5 put the fan into the radiator, had to be pulled up #1 by Abba, thanks dude, then floped on #1 because he lost brakes

this year we also had a new winch hill, we named it 1 3/4

it was right before winch hill 2 and people were having all kinds of trouble on it even though the two toyotas on 38's drove up it in 2wd no problem

friday night we all got plastered and tried to build a couple of obstacles on our hill but all the star trek guys just drovve over everything.

if you were on the run on saturday you saw me at the bottom of two all by myself handing out coozies

I havent gotten my pictures developed but on saturday there was a samuria on 38's with stock drivetrain that blew his clutch on #1 and had to be drug through the trail behind a scout
