: Another way to fix rear window on 4Runner

I thought I would share another way to fix the rear window on 1st gen. 4runners. You can directly bypass safeties and use Roger Brown's site to track things down- but by purchasing 2, $10.00 relays and an hour of splicing and jumping- the rear window will work great! (as long as the motor is not shot of course). Rear Window will work with key out too.
Basically, pull the side panel next to the rear seat on driver side. Pull out the gray box that controls the window and wiring harness. Splice in the relays. We did this on two separate 4runners. One of them did not need step 3 (jump a ground on the rear window switch itself) on the directions- and the second one did. Very easy to do- No crawling around in the back, pulling stuff apart.
This page shows pretty much everything..

I think the relay is ka-put in my 87. When I operate either switch (console or rear key) I hear a *click* from where the relays are located. Does this mean they are bad?
Anyone have the ultimate solution to fixing the rear window? I'd love to bypass all the switches and get it down a simple circuit ( better for simple minds) I want to be able to use the console switch with or with out the key on and the rear key switch. Any ideas?

Give the guy some credit.....He searched which is a lot more then we can say about half the people here. Granted he may need to search some more since the thread is 3 years old.

Does anyone know the best way to rewire the window? Mine is not operating at all, relay seems ok so i'm thinking its one of the many switches. I would love to bypass them (saftey switches.. wiper switch..) and have 2 switches, console and rear gate, on one simple circuit.
Anyone done this before?

I've been searching, maybe i'm not filmiliar enough with the site, search doesn't work for @#$% on here for me. Just looking for some direction or ideas. Sure I can run my own stuff and see how it works out, which I'm sure would be fine, but if someone has done, maybe a few times, why not ask the pros, ya know. Thanks again. Flame me all you like, I don't mind the attention.

I get pm's about a "kit" all the time, giot 1 a few days ago, & got on the phone to a buddy, well his wife:D Left message to have hom bring his 87 over & leave it & I'll fis the rear window with a bypass setup, should be able to reuse the stock switch & key. I'll post up when I get through:) dought there is much $ in a kit, but I'll post up the fix for FREE & maybe offer a little jumper wire kit if needed:grinpimp: I like many others will buy parts that save me time & hassle, like u-bolts, brackets etc.........TIME IS MON$Y

Look on Roger Brown's website. All you have to do is run 2 small jumper wires between 4 of the terminals on the factory rear window relay. Takes 5 minutes with a soldering iron. The relay is on the driver's side right behind the lower mount for the front seat belt - by the rear left passenger's ankle.

Boom. Rear window switch on the console works ALL the time. If you cut the switch uder the hardtop bolt and the one in the tailgate out of the circuit, then it works ALL the time. Before I bobbed my truck and ditched the tailgate, I could roll the back window up/down with the console switch with the hardtop off... the tailgate folded down, and the key in my pocket if I wanted. It was pretty nice. :)

not 100% sure, but all that seems to do is bypass having to turn on the ignition to get power to the switch, still has the relay in the system, so if the relay is bad(THE PART WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BYPASSING) then that won't work.

here is what I did on my 90' runner. maybe it will help. I left the safety switch in and left the "brain box" in to control my wipers and defrost.

Seabass, if you came up with something that is quick and easy, I'm in for one...my window is beat but I just have too many other things to do to deal with it.

I jumpered the switch in my console--worked great. I'll see if I can find the photo I posted a few months back.

Seabass, I'm in too. And once I figure out what I'm doing as far as accessories on my runner I'll contact you for some switches. So if you figure out a fix for the rear window please let me know.

Dammit if I can't find the photo right now. I reformatted my HDD in April and can't find a lot of my rig shots.

I don't think it bypassed the entire relay behind the DS seat panel; it may have shorted a couple of the relay's connectors so it thought all the other switches were closed.

The in-console up/down switch is 5- or 6-pole; the jumper was between two outside poles....[/i]I'll yank it back out and take another picture.[/i] It may not solve everyone's problems, but it solved mine. I took the console lock switch out completely. this also alleviated the need to have the "4th" bolt in the top on the DS, and bypassed the wiper switch (so watch the wiper arm)

Rolled the Runner last year. No more rear glass. That problem is solved permanently! :flipoff2:

I think it's a 2 pole, D.P.D.T. 6 terminal
a 5 pole switch would have 20 terminals:laughing:  :p
