Honestly from my experience start with el'cheepos if its a new build as you may torch several pairs in the build....I have destroyed many Rancho's over the build but now have settled into some Cage shocks,.. pretty damn happy with them:smokin:

I've ran alot of shocks... I have been the happiest with Bilstein 5125s

If you want to invest a little money, talk with the PBB vendors about some FOAs

That's what I've got now, they seem to be a pretty good balance between performance & cost. I think mine were around $75 each.

Give the doetsch 8000 pre runners a try with built in bump. you won't be disappointed. about 46 bucks a piece.

That's an expensive place to start. Great place to finish though!!

Rancho until you get your build right!! Sounds more economical.

I have never run them but I do know that Rusty's stuff in general is piss poor. My shocks are piss poor regardless.

I am just going to skip this whole process of getting some good regular shocks and going to move straight to the air shocks anyway.

Do check out FOA shocks... They are pirate vendors and make nice sets of shocks

Thats a cheap place to start, and a shitty place to finish...

I went from white shocks, to 5150's... Great improvement, seemed to handle the rig well...

Then I went from 5150's to 7100's in the front (275/78 valving) and Fox 2.0's in the rear - and I noticed a performance increase - the rig felt more stable at speed, and the suspension felt more controlled...

I've got Fox 2.5 Airshocks in the front now, and haven't run em yet, but I hope to have at least the same performance as the 7100's...

The problem with shock questions, is that everyone has their own needs in their own rig... and not everyone has the same taste for what valving or dampening characteristics they want...

Price is always a factor...
5150's run about $100 a piece
7100's run about $175 a piece
the Fox 2.0's - I got used for $200 for the pair...
the Fox 2.5 AS run about $375 each...

I prefer a stiffer valving than most people...

I am looking to do Radflo Air shocks all around. Not sure if I should run 2.0 in the rear or 2.5. I am looking at 14" in the rear and 16" in the front. The site says the 2.0 are good for a 5000 lb rig but it also says 2.0 shocks can only hold around 600lbs.

I know my rig is around 4200 and it is going to be 5000 when the 60 and 70 and 42" go go but regardless 4 shocks at 600 = 2400 pounds. the jeep has more sprung weight then that.

What do you cats think?

I'm a huge fan of my FOAs. They have revolutionized the performance of my rig. The customer service is pretty off the charts as well.

i'll throw in that the price was right for my budget at the time for some 12" travel 5150's... driving is very different than some cheapo dampeners on other xj's i've driven with a near setup as mine
