Anyone ever do this? Will the hub seal keep the 90 weight from leaking onto the brake rotor? I would think not, but apparently this has been done before.
Basically referring to removing the seal in the swivel housing and placing a bushing in it's place. All of this to fit early D110 CV's in my '90 RRC swivel housing.

Yes plenty of people do this, it will work. You may want to get the earlier style double lip design hub seals though.
How much earlier style.... In other words, what the hell are you talking about? I am not sure exactly which year/model of hub seals you are referring.

i've heard before that you can do this on the rears, too by machining off the seal on the hub side of the axles.
not sure of the particulars. I would guess that most aftermarket rear axles for the rover don't have the raised seal surface anyway.

Here is what the hell I'm talking about. From the GBR website:
"Tech Tip: we recommend using RTC3511 hub seals even if you don't eliminate the axle case seal. This is a double lip seal and a vast improvement over the seal currently specified by Land Rover. When Land Rover added the axle case seal they used a much less effective hub seal because the wheel bearing now specified only requires wheel bearing grease for the bearings. Wheel bearing grease is very easy to seal in because it does't go anywhere ie: it doesn't flow. The problem is the current specified seal isn't very effective at sealing things out such as water - hence the risk premature of wheel bearing failure! When installing RTC3511 hub seals, recess them 3mm into the hub or you will get a false reading on your wheel bearing preload."
Don't grind the sealing surface off the axle, that would certainly weaken it. Simply take the spindle off and remove the seal found on the inside of it on the rear.

I had hoped someone w/ a clue would pipe in about those rears :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Oh yeah! I remember reading that once, it just didn't register. I am guessing this hub seal is available at Rovers North or someplace similiar. I'll check around and see.
Thanks Fear Factory!

on my axles (earlier 110 type 23spline CV's), usually whenever i dismantle the hubs, some oil leaks out that has somehow worked its way into the bearings!
christ knows how it does, i just presume the oil seals at the end of the CV shaft arn't that great. still, extra oil is vastly better than NO oil!
