I just bought a runner a week ago. I knew rust was present, but after removing the spare its apparent the last 2 feet of the frame are pretty rusted. Still seems fairly solid, doesnt crush from hammering, but its flaking big pieces of rust. What should I do? The rest of the frame looks ok. If I sandblast it and repaint will it be ok? Thanks

Yes.
Or do the right thing and cut the rusty ends off and bob it. :flipoff2:

There is no point to sandblasting it. That probably won't even take all of the rust off. If it looks like you said, there is nothing you can do. If you remove all of the rusted metal, there will be hardly anything left and it won't even be as strong as before you started. Just leave it alone if it is solid. Check other areas too. The worst is normaly the area around the rear spring hanger. That is where the frames like to break in half.:D

The area around the rear spring hanger is ok. Its gets ugly farther back than that. So should I not do anything to slow the spread of the rust? If it gets really bad can I cut the back 2 feet off the frame and weld on a new piece? Thanks

I had to replace the frame from beneath the doors to the tailgate on my 86 runner. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!! Took over 20 hours from start to finish (includes beer breaks)!

Drive out to California and get one of my bare rust-free '85 frames! :D I've got two in the for sale section. Come on, you know you want to do a frame swap. Hardly any work. :D
