: Hog Trapping
muddawg95yj 11-17-2008, 07:18 PM My in-laws have a wild hog problem on their farm. My dad and I are going to build a trap and trap them. I have researched several different types of traps online. I have hunted the hogs before, but never attempted to trap them. Who here has done this before and are there any tips or tricks I should know?
Numidian 11-17-2008, 08:21 PM Why not just shoot them?
southernfriedcj8 11-17-2008, 09:15 PM Build a 12' long, 4' wide, 4' high chain link "box". Use treated 2x4 or fence rail tubing for the frame. Put chain link or hog wire on it for a roof. You don't need a floor, stake it to the ground with steel siltfence posts. On one end make a gate, hinged at the top and have it swing to the outside. Make the gate spring loaded and put a latch on the frame so it locks when it's closed. Bait the far end of the trap and set a trip wire at the bait(you can get several hogs in one "catch". Attach trip wire to a catch on the gate. Hog hits wire, wire pulls catch. Gate swings down and latches shut.
Bait the trap without setting the wire a few times until the piney woods rooters get comfortable. After a few times of feeding them set the wire and you'll get a bunch of hogs. The are smart. You may need to retrain the untrapped hogs to feed in the trap.
Use corn and peanut butter to draw them in. Make a corn trail into the trap.
Call me for the BBQ.
You need to start a new thread "How do I get 6 wild hogs out of a trap"?:flipoff2:
Tim84K10 11-17-2008, 09:29 PM That's some funny ass shit.
Witts Off Road 11-17-2008, 11:48 PM We used to do this as kids in Texas..
If you have two traps you can set one then wait until you catch a sow. Usually then there will be 4+ piglets running around closeby. You can either shoot them to eat right then or set the other trap and feed em up a little before the bbq.

Because I could be trapping them while we are out shooting deer. :homer:

Dieselmh 11-18-2008, 06:11 AM Take 5 gallons of deer corn, add about half a gallon of diesel, mix it up, and use that. I don't know why, but hogs love diesel. We've set our traps using nothing but a little diesel dribbled here and there, and caught hogs. The most we've caught at once was 19, and that's in an 8 foot diameter round trap. Build a portable ramp that will connect between the trap and your trailer, and you can load hogs quickly and painlessly, without having to rope them and drag them in.

Intresting.... Diesel
The trap I am planning on building is 8'x4' and will have a door that they can push open from the outside after the first hog has tripped it and is trapped. My thinking is that if a sow goes in, maybe the piglets will follow...
The diesel tip is the kind of stuff I am looking for. The farm is about 3500 acres of corn, so I am not sure a pile of corn in a trap will be the best bait by itself. Has anybody tried any of the hog bait you can buy at Bass Pro and places? I think the stuff I saw was called Hog Wild and was in a gallon jug.
Thanks for the links, Albin!

Not saying Silverzuk can't help you, but we don't really have many hogs in WV.

I have never seen a wild hog, except a few dead ones along I-95 in Georgia.
If I had a hog problem, I wouldn't be setting traps - I would be training dogs to run and bay them
A local guy worked on a 13,000 acre ranch in Florida for years and still goes back once a year to hunt hogs. I told him I want to go next time.
So maybe I'll get a chance to see some hog dogs in action and take one with a spear.

You know, funny you say that.... Until about 2 years ago, I had never seen a wild hog either. Those bastids multiply like crazy. I have the materials to build the trap and hope to get started on it this weekend. I will take pics and post if anybody might be interested.

Hunting hogs with dogs at night with a knife is one of the most fun and exhilerating things I've ever done. Word of warning though, you have to be in shape, both the dogs and hogs are faster than you and running 1-500 yards is not uncommon.
I've trapped em before and its just no fun to me. If you are building a trap from scratch, build it with a door that slides down vertically like a guillatine. And put a latch on it. We had one with a vertically hinging door and it was always tripped with no hogs in it. Best I could figure was that they were tripping it while other hogs were still outside of it, and one of them opened the door and let all the others go. Or maybe it was racoons that tripped it, fuck if I know.

listen to the wise aggie who has given you good info. the door needs to be pretty beefy. im talking 60 plus pounds. if not, when it comes down on one of them, they will just lift it up and run out. if its heavy enough, you might get lucky and crush a small one to death, had one do that a few years back.
what works best for me is get some cheap and or skunky beer and mix that with the corn. i usually use Red Dog because you just get the 32 oz bottles for not much and mix that in there. you want to make sure you set the trap to where the slightest tap will set it off. if not, they could get in and get out with all the food if the pressure required to spring it is too high.

If the door doesn't latch, hogs will figure out how to open it, they're smart. If you catch a sow, her piglets will be within 20 yards of the trap when you get there, they won't go far. I don't know what it is about diesel, but they love it. Also, if you've got a lot of corn on the place, go for the stink factor. Mix some corn with old beer and let it sit (covered) out in the sun for a week or so, until it makes you want to puke. They'll smell that shit for miles. :D Also, make your trap twice as beefy as you think it should be. Dad uses hog panels to make the sides, then reinforces it with 3/8 inch rebar every foot or so. He caught a boar a couple of weeks ago that weighed in at almost 170 lbs and he beat the shit out of the trap. He didn't get out, but he broke some of the factory welds on the hog panels, and bent the rebar into big U shapes.

man, 170 lbs did that? i wonder what this guy would have done to your trap?
Dieselmh 11-19-2008, 08:53 AM man, 170 lbs did that? i wonder what this guy would have done to your trap?
How much did it weigh? Hell, if you leave a 50 lb hog in a trap long enough, you'd be amazed at how much damage it can do.
void_of_light 11-19-2008, 10:07 AM Try some strawberry jello powder as bait.
joshgammill 11-19-2008, 11:44 AM I live in southern Oklahoma and we have hogs terrible. I just saw a group of about 30 the other day but they got of in the creek before I could get a shot at them. I have trapped many hog before and diesel works very well if not the best, with or without other bait. I have also used old motor oil and it works about as well as diesel. I tried the strawberry jello mix but it did not work for me. I sometimes use soured wheat with diesel or oil poured on top of it and that seem to work really well. As for your cage, build it heavy and make sure you have a floor in it. I had one without a floor and you could see the hair left on the top from such a big hog rubbing as he was inside it and it was about 3 1/2 feet tall, and he just flipped the whole trap over and escaped. We usually buil our traps out of 2 inch drill stem pipe with sucker rod. It is amazing what even a small hog can tear up. We have caught several hogs in the 2 to 3 hundred pound range. The best traps we like are the ones were the gate hinges on the side and is spring loaded so others can come in but they cant get out.

yeah, he was up over 300 lbs. didnt stink though, which was a surprise.
toymoto 11-24-2008, 08:38 AM We built ours with the vertical hinged swinging gate. We did this mainly because we wanted to catch multiple hogs at one time. Most of the time the first or second hog in will trip the door, we've got a 10lb window weight on a pulley to close the door. It's heavy enough to hold it closed but light enough that they can push open from the outside. We also angled the door stop to where the hogs can get their head in there and push it.
I made an awesome drawing of it. :flipoff2:
http://www.texasoffroad.net/albums/lonestar/album187/it_s_a_trap.jpg
We also put a board across the front of the door about 12" up so they would slide past it instead of catching the paneling. Crappy pic of it but it's all I got.

This is almost exactly what I am planning to build... Have you ever had any problems with them escaping? What are the dimensions of your trap?

The only ones that escape are the babies that can squeeze through the cattle panel. It's roughly 8' x 8' x 3'
