I have a 74 bronco with a 302...brand new centech wiring harness.. was running great for 2 months then all the sudden one morning it won't start on it's own.. had to jump start it or push start it. When i turn the key i hear a rapid clicking coming either from the voltage regulator or the starter solenoid.. replaced both.. same result. checked my grounds, and other connections.. looking fine. what else could it be? the starter will rotate when i give it juice from a portable jump starter and all.. but if you shut it down and try again with the jump starter hooked up it won't start it'll turn the starter a little.. then go back to clicking....

edit:

that's how it started.. i was messing around now it just clicks 1 time and stops untill i turn the key to off and on again... any ideas i need this truck it's my only ride!

i can take pictures if neccessary...

could be a bad battery or a bad starter.. have them tested Battery first since it is easiest to remove..my money is on the starter being bad though..

I suspect the starter as well, but you need to go get the charging system tested.

So jump it and drive it to your local parts store. They should have a portable charging system tester. You don't need to remove the battery or anything. If it all checks out then it's probably the starter.

Rapid clicks from the solenoid means the battery is bad. BTDT

you can come troubleshoot my junk anytime....... It's always been a mystery how some people just know what's wrong from one symptom. Maybe you should get into the medical field. I bet you'd make a great doctor :flipoff2:

No chance the battery is good and the ALTERNATOR is bad

Your "Start" wiring is your problem...
Could be the small wire that kinda plugs onto the front of the solinoid.....

Or it could be in the steering column, but hope not, for your sake :flipoff2:

Mine was doing that! For months I could not start it on its own, but could find no problem. New battery, starter, centech harness, silinoid etc. NOTHING I did was helping the problem. It ended up being a $1.00 clamp on the NEG battery terminal. Replaced it and it has worked 100%.

That is why you have it tested before you replace it..NAPA, Autozone, and O'Reilly will test them for free here

That should have been easy to diagnose if you ever look at your gages..
