. . . . . run swaybar disconnects on your trucks? My wife and I have a pair from TeraFlex on the front of our TJ and love 'em. However, I don't see too much about them being used on the Toys, either in the mags or online. Anyone have them? How do you like 'em?

I haven't used swaybars in years, it's more fun to look like it's gonna flop on the on ramp :D:D .

Take that POS sway bar off and cut it up and use it for tent pegs.

You'll be glad you did. :flipoff2:

The truck still has to be driven near-daily. I'm not about to drive it without a sway bar! This tells me that the disconnects will be good for my needs.

See ya,

I drive my truck every day and on very long road trips without a sway bar..soft shocks and soft springs and a spool and it handles just fine. Trucks are not sports cars and are not mean to be driven like one.

That's very true. How does it feel at highway speeds, especially in a good head wind?

Damn...i knew i forgot to put something on when i did my SAS

seriously though...you dont "really" need swapbars with leaf springs. Coil are a different story though.

Slower than a geo metro..but thats standard. Trust me you won't miss it and your truck will wheel better.

I run 'em. and I love 'em. If my rig was trail only i'd take the bar off, but it's not. I live in the mountains, and i'd rather have the truck handle the curvy roads safely.

All you guys who say just dump em, are you trail only?

Here in Aus we never had sway bars fitted to our leaf sprung toys at all from factory. It wasn't even an option. Our front housings don't even have the mounts on them. Our IFS Front/Leaf rear rigs only had them on the front but our IFS Front/ Coil rears had them both ends.

Nope, drive it eveyday and many many highway miles through mountains and over the plains.

I drove my 85 toy with 35's lockers and no sway bar everyday on the freeways here in Los Angeles. It rides fine without it and gets more travel. Just ditch the sucker!

Any one have anything technical to say? Disconnects give you the best of both worlds. Why would a leaf sprung vheicle not benifit from a swaybar? Body roll occurs with all types of springs. Again, not talking about trail only rigs here.

When I drive on pavement without the bar connected, handling and braking are much worse then with it connected. If i have to make any quick moves, it sucks. With the bar engaged, much safer. Could I live without it? Sure, no prob, but why when I can have my cake and eat it to?

hey steve i agree with you.
i have tried running my bar disconnected and connected and the difference was huge. i commute on a very windy road and i like to speed. so when i go crawling i just pull the pins and sleeves off while locking in the hubs and i'm ready to twist.

it's no big deal and if you commute a windy road like me you can sleep in later cause you can go faster that 25mph.:flipoff2:

That's what I thought too. Our Jeep TJ is very unstable without the swaybar when you're doing anything over 30 mph. Granted, it has the 4" TeraFlex lift which is very soft, but even with the Ranchos set to their firmest setting it can be scary.

Thanks for the input, everyone - I appreciate everyone's opinion!

I love the sway bars on my TOW RIG!

Toss the say bars out for your trail rig. Get a daily driver for the street.

Chris, agreed for a trailer queen trail rig, but not everyone trailers thier rigs. I fail to see any logic in your post regarding discos. What is wrong with having the ability to engage or disengage a swaybar?

BTW, I have a daily driver, but I still drive my rig to and from the trails, so I guess I'm not as "cool" as those of you who have a trailer ......

I've got a long arm lift on my TJ and was running Rubicon with sway bars disconnected. Bolt sheared on track bar and vehicle had absolutely no steering. Turn the wheel and the body just rotated over the frame. Would have killed me if it had happened at highway speeds.
It's pretty much OK on slow trails to run without them, but those coils don't do anything for centering the vehicle if your track bar goes.
I switched to Currie Anti-Rock sway bars because you can leave them connected without losing articulation.
I don't plan to use them on the Toy I'm building. Jeep experience tells me springs should hold things in place.

On a toyota the sway bar gets in the way of crossover steering. I know it may be different on a jeep but with a toyota you need to get rid of the sway bar before you can set it up properly.

The sway bar is also extra weight to carry around.

i used to have sway bar disconnects.

they were always disconeected and i was to lazy to hook it all back up. besides it hardly rides any different with or with out them!

I can see the merits of having no swaybar on a hardcore rig, even one that is street-driven, but my wife and I have not gotten nearly as in-depth with either our Jeep or our Toy. The worst stuff we drive over are some pretty bad trails (or no trail at all sometimes) to get to our favorite camping spots. We have done no rock crawling and I doubt we ever will. Maybe I'm just a gadget freak, but I think I'll get the disconnects. Believe it or not, even for our mild use the extra articulation in front does make a difference!

Thanks everyone,

hey Steve-

nope- mine's a daily driver, I live in the AZ mountains- no problems. The truck won't go fast enough to need'm :D

Seriously, w/ a spool, 35's and 5" All Pro SAS,the truck does fine thru the switch backs on Hwy 89A (Prescott to Jerome and Sedona to Flagstaff) w/ no sway bar. The section of Hwy 89A from Prescott to Jerome is a local favorite for the crotch rocket crowd- very twisty, tight turns. I did notice a little more body roll after getting the cab exo'd, but it's still a easy truck to drive. It'll pull thru the corners that are signed at 15 MPH at 25 to 30 MPH no problem- of course a crotch rocket or Vet will get thu'm at over 60- as long as the rain hasn't washed gravel over the road :D

Like Chris said, it's a goner once crossover is installed. But My understanding is the crossover setup comps for not having the bar quite a bit compared to the stock push-pull steering.

I drive mine daily, with no sway bar and no problems. Its not a mustang, its a truck. Anyway who wants to climb under their rig after a ride unless its to fix something. One less thing to worry with.

The sway bar is also extra weight to carry around. Erik B runs a sway bar with x-over steering. He adapted one from something and it comes in from behind the axle has disconnects and works well on and off the road. How much extra weight does a sway bar add, not much when it comes to making a DD safer on the road. Trailered rock buggy heck no you do not need one but some people have to drive their rigs daily because they cannot afford 3-4 vehicles. No I do not have one on my heavy ass rig buy my DD has one on the front. Not everyone is as fortunate as you and I to have a rig just for wheeling.

I don't run a sway bar on my truck and don't feel its needed .
I run adjustable shocks and stiffin them up when taking long trips and it helps control body roll
but the rig in question is a jeep right ? I don't think they drive right with a sway bar :flipoff2:

removing the swaybar was the first 'mod' i did to my truck...actually i did it part way through my engine drop.

it used to be my daily driver(and it still would be) untill i rolled it. i picked the wrong line and had no weight in the bed...so don't think the sway bar had anything to do with it.

my sig pretty much says it all. for awhile i had a buggy leaf in the rear and it rode great(i disabled it). after i did my u-bolt flip i didn't run rear shocks. on windy roads it was fine.

so i vote for taking them off.

happy trails

Yes im going to leave my sway bar on my toy and run disconnects on it , when it does get wheeled.

A sway bar is a must for how I tend to drive. :D I tend to drive my truck like it was the turbo car with koni's :D
