They say right on them at the bottom of the casting below the cover. 44 or 60F. A 60F is very very heavy so if it looks as you and a freind can simply load it into the back of your truck then it is a 44. The tubes on a 44 will be 2.75 and a 60 will be 3.125 or 3.250, the u-joints on a 44 are about 3.250 and on a 60 they 4.125

If it's a Dana axle, there will be a BOM number stamped on front of the long side axle tube. You can use this number to figure out what the axle is and what vehicle it originally came out of.

Dana BOM lookup (http://www2.dana.com/Expert/wc.dll?DSD~demenu~DEMENUA~)

For a right side 60 you will need to look under 1 ton Chevy's and pre 94 Dodges and pre 94 3/4 Diesel Dodges.

Half the problem is that it's on the other side of a fence, so I can't read the numbers on it. (Its in the back yard of a rv/moving van rental place near my office)

My co-worker thinks it might be a dana 44.

It's got 8lug wheels on it, and it looks like the diff cover has 10? bolts. its a passenger side diff. the spring pad is part of the housing on the pass side. It's got disk brakes(they look big) and it doesn't have manual hubs(slugs?)

There is also a realy large rear end sitting next to it. Also 8 lugs, full floater, w/ big drum brakes. it has a large round pumpkin with a removable diff cover, and a removable 3rd member.

They possibly came off the same truck.

It looks a lot like this axle

I thought the rear was an eaton. What's it worth? (not that I need it)

asuming they came out of the same truck, should the front a 44 or a 60?

check out the u bolts on the dif side. The 60's use 1 u-bolt and two studs on the diff side of the axle.

I dont know if this is how all 60 fronts are but its how the ones I have seen are.

Check the steering knuckles also
All Disc brake Dana44 axles are Ball joint
All Chevy Dana 60's are Kingpin (4 bolt bearing caps )
Pre-94 Dodge 60's are like chevys
Post 94 Dodges look like BIG Dana 44 with no locking hubs.
All Fords are driver side drop. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Seriously, go over and talk to the guy. If the place is outta business or some other crap, then have your buddy spot, and take a look see. Not like you are fawkin spraying gang markings or vandalizing. If the police give you shit, explain your 4by obsession. Or get an awesome lawyer.

If Johnny could get OJ off, then you will be fine <IMG SRC="smilies/smokin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/smokin.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/smokin.gif" border="0">

If the rear end is 8 lug, FF, and drop out 3rd - it's an Eaton. They are stout axles, slightly stronger than 14bolts. They came in 3/4 ton 62 to 72 chevy's so chances are it's got a d44 in front.

My thoughts exactly. Probably a 44 front

Barbed wire, and it's at work so I'm in my nice work clothes.

I think I'll plan a little recon mission for this weekend, and get the numbers off the housing.

I just went and had another look at it.

It's defently got ball joint style knukles. and the curved streering arm.

no studs on the pass side spring pad, it got a notch in it for u-bolts. kinda looks like you would have to use 2 different length u-bolts.

It must be a 44. kinda strange that it doesn't ahve locking hubs....

Thanks for the help guys.
