: IH tow rig wanted.

I put a sign in my dodge today. Having a new rig is really sweet and stuff but I'm tired of the payment and not getting anything back. If I'm gonna dump several hundred dollars a month into something, kind of would like to have something to show for it.

Looking for a 'C' series travelette of travellal. I would like to pull a gooseneck someday so a truck would be better obviously. But, I can bumper pull my junk for a few more years.

Like all IH guys, money is tight now until the truck sells, which could be a while. I would be willing to trade some serious labor or work.
My plan is to run it as is for a few months then gather up the CTD/6spd, 60F, 14bolt rear. Really focus on making it nice and comfortable.

Please keep the CXT/MXT pics to a minimum. Not sure I could or would want one. Or a 4700 for that matter.

It doesn't matter where its at. If the price is right, I'll travel or have it shipped.

Thanks!

I've got a line on 4 or 5 old binder trucks. I've got to go and talk to an old fella about a 195? one ton when I go home for thanksgiving. He's got a few more hanging around there in great shape. I'll take some pics and post up if you're still in the market.

BTW, I've got similar plans for the old dually: 12v,allison,14bolt, 19.5s pulling the scout around.

If you knew anyone with something like a 1980 something one ton dually with a questionable body you could probably find any old IH cab and drop it on top. I wouldn't tell anyone:D IIRC Hooper had some sort of heavy duty IH that is now probably covered with weeds

Theres a C series Travelette long bed 2x4 for $600.00 on the Denver Craigslist, it looks pretty good, been on there for awhile. I really like the C series over the D also, been thinking about building the 1966 Travelall Panel that i have had for 9 years but its just to good of a storage unit. Lately i have been really thinking about getting rid of my 2 dodge diesels and building a IH tow rig but i just have to many other projects going on to start another one.

The Travelette I was thinking of was a round body, I didn't think much of it at the time cause... while I like them, I'm "committed" to D-series right now :D I should probably at least "finish" on of them so I can enjoy it before I change projects... again.

If I remeber right it was a nice looking truck, and IIRC a short bed. If it pops up again I'll let you know. I have a feeling it didn't sell (not much is right now).

I'm actually kind of growing into the C-series as well. They do have a nice shape, but most require much more work to get them 'road worthy" (IMO) with brake swaps and steering etc, you just start closer with the D's. Plus parts are more common and available.

Kind of like Scout vs Scout II's :D

I know I know... but storage is the sole factor holding me back. I doubt that you one could talk them into buying it and then just leaving it there. I wouldn't feel good about that anyhow, even if they would go for it. If I wasn't around to "babysit" it, who knows what they'd do to/with it once they got money out of it. With that pickup bed I doubt you could get enough wood in there to squat the springs. I would also guess the turning radius to be measured in city blocks. With the height of the bed loading and unloading anything would be a chore. I think it is a totally cool looking rig with very little practical value.

If it's 4x4 (looks it) that would be perfect.
Build a flatbed on back & your set for firewood.
Got the weight for plowing.

Plus, you could find a PU camper to drop on the flatbed.

Oddly enough this weekend I have been offered a 60's loadstar former CALTRANS plow w/plow and a 70 something Loadstar stakebed in or around the free range. Possibly another 74 travelall. Some land owner had to repo his place and the guy wont get his shit off the lot :shaking:

That truck was sold last year for $1300.00. I do not know if the current owner is who bought it for $1300.00 but the truck sold for a thousand and he paid the guy three hundred to deliver it. It was a 2wd and the guy that did the buildup had a complete build thread on one of the IH sites about it.

Not a bad build up and probably an OK truck, but not worth $3000.00 IMO.

Too bad it's not a 3/4 ton truck, 8 lug rims. Then it would be worth the 3k for sure. It's hard to find clean old trucks, there out there, but you got to be looking for a while and when you do find one somebody got an 8K price tags on them.:shaking: I bought my old truck for $4,100 and its in original condition and very clean. I have not done a thing but change the oil and tires in 4 years.:smokin:

I'm pretty sure it is a 3/4 ton truck. You can see the floater hubs sticking out of the rear hubcap. I think it still has drum brakes on it and a front Dana 44.
I'll see if I can find the thread, it was not on binder bulletin but the other site for IH stuff.

The rims are 6 lug.

I thought early IH products had a large six lug pattern on their 3/4 ton stuff.
Don't think they got conventional and went 8 lug till 73.

I believe the switch was ~68/69, when they switched from C to D body. You'll find some C bodies with 8-lug, but I've never seen a D body with 6-lug.

Not a solid IH guy, was not sure about the year on the switch, but I was pretty sure early 3/4 ton stuff was the big 6 lug pattern. Thanks for clearing up the years.

Dan,

If you're still hunting for one, PM me ~ I've got a guy out east of the Colo Springs area that has a CRAP ton of IH pickups, t-ettes, etc. All kinds. I'll give you his info.

Binderbound lost his job a little while ago.... I'm pretty sure he is in the market for a yugo rather than another IH right now.

The guy I passed to Dan has a mid 60's travellal like that, I loved that thing, it's the ambulance edition (so the roof is raised) and it's slammed. First time I saw it, it had some SWEET mag rims on it. Really looked the part. :smokin:

Did you read the add? 444e= industrial powerstroke. No thanks. 8 lug wheels? No thanks. 4 speed Allison auto? No thanks.

It is sad though, the asking price is what I owe on my pickup

Yeah I read the ad, I still think it's a good rig, besides a DT466 and just about any transmission you'd ever want is a straight forward swap.

And ouch on the pickup, just remember you can sleep in your truck but you can't drive your house.

Its one step above my pickup as far as GVW goes. The highest hp rating you could get that configuration in 235hp/620ftlbs and that allison is rated good up to 250hp/650ftlbs. 8 lug wheels? really?

I'm still gonna go the Mechanos route and build a camper/goosneck set up. I'll just drive my pickup until the bloody end. I might be getting my moms old Hyundia. If so, Dodge will see MUCH less use anyway.
