: 5.4 conversion
SHARPMACHINE 11-21-2008, 07:28 AM Most people would think it crazy, but has anyone done a 5.4 ford conversion? I have been looking for a 5.3 gm and came across a 2000 expadition that all the body parts are junk on. It is a 5.4, automatic, 4x4 with about 105,000 miles, still runs and drives. I like fords so this would be cool unless it is going to be unfavorable compared to a 5.3 (they are simular in power I believe). It would be going in a jEeP.
Please share your thoughts.
Also:
1. What transfer case options would I have (it has an electric shift one now)?
2. What tranny would this be?
3. Dificulty leval to modify wiring harness?
thanks alot
Greatlakeoffroad 11-21-2008, 09:59 AM I would get the new 5.4 if going that route. The newer engines have more valves and HP, the 2000 was a doggy motor at best. I opt for the 5.3
1sicbronconut 11-21-2008, 10:23 AM What's it going in? Those motors are a lot wider than you think. The old 5.4 is a decent motor but if I was going through the trouble I'd find a three or four valve motor.

He mentioned it is going in a jeep.
I agree on the spatial issues. The mod motors are as big or bigger than big blocks so the space will be tight. I've seen pics of Jeeps with BBC motors in them though so I'd say it can likely be done.
IMHO, the LSx GM motors, a standard old SBC or a standard SBF would be much easier to package in a Jeep.
SHARPMACHINE 11-21-2008, 12:51 PM Thanks guys,
Based on that and what I learned from google, I think I will keep looking for a 5.3.
thanks

Not only the width issues, but the early one had the spark plug issues. The 04-07 3v have a spark plug issue of their own as well, which seems to have been fixed in the late 07 models. This time they don't spit out they just won't come out. I'm not looking forward to changing the plugs on mine.
1sicbronconut 11-22-2008, 11:29 AM Yup I've removed about 30 broken plugs on the 04'-07' 3 valve motors motors. Ford has come out with a kit to remove the broken plugs. The bone headed guy that designed the plugs did a great job:mad3:, there about a 1.5 inch section that sits in the head before the taper that seals the plug. This section gets carboned up and breaks off in the head. The trick is to get the engine hot crack the plugs loose and spray some sort of cleaner down there and let it soak as long as possible.
B2Krawler 11-23-2008, 09:25 AM I have a 5.4 (2000) in my expedition, and the plugs do take some time to change. its not that bad if you take your time. it has good power. its big but has more hp/tq than the GM, and is a much more advanced engine. the later 3 and 4 valve ones have more power, navigators had the better heads.
but,
I hate to say this, since Im a Ford guy, but you can buy a turn key 5.3 on ebay for less than $1k. theres a guy who sells refurbed 5.3s ready to drop in any project on ebay, we just bought one for a samurai and were very pleased

im also a ford guy, but after driving many diffrent vehicles, i have to say the 5.3s will spank most 5.4s. :( For the size, id go with the 5.3. Tons of power, small package. The 1500s usually pull much harder than the F150s. And i hate to say it, but its true.:(
BeefCakeScout 11-24-2008, 10:49 PM Just to go against the grain:flipoff2:
I like the design of the 5.4 and the low end it has. Been thinking about swapping one into something myself. They are getting fairly common among the Rod crowd for being a well balanced package. The BIG problem as stated before is the plug issue. I have the head off my 01 expo right now, and its a pain in the ass. But you also have to realize that ford sunk that fucker 18 feet into the firewall! There is a kit(that i'm using) that lets you drill out the factory threads and install sleeves.Guaranteed never to blow a plug. But, if you are on a budget, these guys are right. go with the 5.3
