In the *old* thread on crossover steering (pre-software change) someone stated that you could convert a steering column from a manual steering setup to work with a Saginaw box by punching out three roll pins and collapsing a section of the column. Well, I got the frame boxed and bolt holes sleeved last night, mounted the box... and there ain't no stinking roll pins. This one has a two-piece shaft with a short telescoping coupler; and it doesn't telescope nearly enough. The outer part of the column is two-piece also and parts at the firewall flange; nothing to telescope there. Also there's a rotating adjusting collar in there for the shifter mechanism; I pulled all three bolts from it and from the bushing at the end of the column, but there isn't anything to collapse - shafts are solid in there. Looks like I can either pull the lower shaft, chop out about 4" and weld it back together; or change out the steering column. SOOOOOOOO,,,, while the steering column fix may be straightforward on some trucks, it sure isn't on all of them.
