: 80 series alarm defeat?
Kaderabek 08-13-2002, 08:32 AM Anybody know how to defeat the alarm on a 1994 FZJ80? Works fine if you use the remote thingamabobber (of which we have one), but sets off the alarm if you open the door using the key. I'm afraid to go near the truck at this point, feel like it hates me (which I know our neighbors do, but that's nothing new).
Thanks,
TJK
Your manual should tell you how to set it up so it doesnt do that. My 97 has some passive arming system so when you lock the truck it arms. You also may have the glass breakage sensor set too sensitive. I havent had any problems yet, but I will disable the whole thing if it starts to act up.

Kaderabek 08-13-2002, 08:40 AM Glass breakage sensor? Passive arming system? Manual...?
I have yet to find any useful information in that manual, but will take a look at lunch. After I have my wife open the damned truck of course.
Thanks!

(Silly me...)
Actually, now that I think about it, The security system has its own manual. YOu may want to look at that also, it you have it. My 80 has a rs3000 system on it. I dont know what the earlier 80s had, but if it is the same I can make some copies and send it to you if you dont have the original security manual.

Kaderabek 08-13-2002, 10:12 AM Pretty good link to some information here, thanks to Brian Lingenfelter:

That said, I think this system must be aftermarket. The remote doesn't say Toyota on it, but rather TDS. Any idea? And nothing in the manual, which otherwise are very complete. Was no alarm an option, or rather was the alarm system an option?

Shocker FZJ80 08-13-2002, 10:40 AM If it's stock Toyota, the key fob may not necessarily say "Toyota" on it anywhere....... I've heard other instances of this occuring. Especially if you are not the first owner; previous owner could have lost the original and had it replaced with aftermarket remote.
Have you tried putting the key in the ignition and starting the car? You'd have to put up with the alarm for a few seconds, but most OEM alarms (mine included) will stop if the vehicle's ignition is turned on.
Kaderabek 08-13-2002, 10:44 AM When the alarm is triggered there are two things that will silence it. 1 -- using the remote; 2 -- removing the positive battery cable. If my wife's keys are around I choose the former, if not the latter. When I reconnect the battery cable it's fine until I try to start the vehicle, when the alarm goes off again. And the truck won't start, ignition is locked. I guess I'll try the procedure described at that link, see if it works.

Dude, maybe I'm way off base here but couldn't you go to the dealer and pick up a spare fob? That is assuming of course that it is a toyota alarm. How much can a fob be? $20-$30, to cure not only your's but your neighbor's headaches. Money well spent.
Worse case scenario..... it's an aftermarket alarm, and the dealer can't help you, find the brain of the alarm and get the manuf. information off of it. Send the manuf. a letter explaining your need of a new fob and wait for a response. If thay say screw you, you're no worse off than you already are. 'Cept maybe then you need a new alarm.
Kaderabek 08-14-2002, 05:57 AM In fact worst case I think I'll take it to a place that installs alarms and have them remove it. Here's what transpired last night, posted to the LCML:

My attempts to resolve the problem last night were unsuccessful, if loud. I tried Jack's suggestion: locked the doors with the remote, opened them with the key, alarm sounds, turn the key on/off, on/off. When I did the second on/ the truck started, and the alarm silenced. I was hoping this had solved the problem, but when I repeated the procedure (locked the doors with the remote, opened them with the key) the alarm sounded again. So unless I don't mind the alarm sounding every time I open the door with my key and continuing to do so until I start the truck, this solution regrettably isn't successful.
I then used the procedure described in the RS3000 manual, again to no avail. The main problem here is that it describes holding both remote buttons on for 2 seconds to begin the procedure, and I only have one button. I tried it anyway, thinking maybe the one button would encompass the two, and actually it seems to work ok through the procedure, except I never get the described "Piezo chirp," and the alarm eventually won't reset to valet mode. By this point I have a headache and give up.
I did look under the driver's seat, and saw no control module. Is it buried under the carpet, or visible at a glance? I looked thoroughly, and came to the conclusion that the wiring harness attached to nothing under there must be for the factory alarm, which isn't there. So I ask, where is the TDS module located? And can it be reset to valet at the module? Or just removed without killing the truck?
What a mess, and why this is happening I have no idea. I guess that's the frustrating part -- I feel like I have the ability to fix this with the remote, as clearly I caused it with the remote. But what to do, what to do?
Jim, do you have a TDS manual you could look at for me and describe how to reset to valet mode? Anyone have one?
Again, thanks.

Anyone have a TDS manual?
TDS in apparently installed at the dealer, but non-Toyota, so I doubt I can get a fob from the dealer, but I'll call.

Iron Yuppy 08-19-2002, 03:58 PM Even a "Genuine Toyota" alarm might be aftermarket. Alarms, like roof racks, are often aftermarket, even if they are dealer installed. They seldom come installed from the factory, and vary region to region. If you know where your Cruiser was originally sold, call the dealer there and ask what brand of alarm they use, or if the have the manuals available on-line or fax.
Post a pic of the remote if its like mine (95' fzj 80) I will send you the spare that I have and a copy of the directions for free.
The key chain part is broken but it does work although it might need a battery.
Its a Audiovox remote and can be ordered off there web site, thats why I have an extra one:)
EDIT:
Does it look like this?
Kaderabek 08-20-2002, 05:08 AM It does look like that, and that is a TDS remote. Maybe Audiovox and TDS are related somehow. I got the programming instructions & ran through the procedures, to no avail. Sounds like I have more than just a need to reset to valet mode (which I can't do). It goes to my favorite audio/alarm guy next Monday when he's back from vacation. In the meantime neither my 62 or my 55 are alarming me, and I'm avoiding the 80.

Kaderabek 08-20-2002, 05:38 AM If you have no use for that extra remote I'd be happy to pay the shipping for it (and the instructions). I think it's weird that yours says Audiovox, and mine TDS. They're identical.

Here is the web page for more info:

Might have to copy and paste aove link
PM me your info and Ill see what I can do. I have alot stuff on my plate for this week and next so it might take some time.
I dont think it will cost much to send you the stuff cant be more than 5.00 bucks. Dont worry about the shipping yet, let me get some more details first.:D :) :D
Also with this alarm system there should be a valet switch some were near your dash. Mine is located on the drivers side kick pannel near the fuse box. But yours could be in the glove-box or center console.
Kaderabek 08-22-2002, 12:34 PM I have that very same valet switch (same spot), but it seems to be malfunctioning, as the reset procedure won't work. Monday, to the alarm shop, getting close anyway.
