Hey Guys, I'm considering buying a Ford Bronco, and need some help!
It has a 400ci, how much Horsepower and Torque does this engine have stock?
What axles are under this vehicle?
What Transfer Case is in this vehicle?
Is there any "Weak Links" In this vehicle?
Can the 400ci be easily modified? (Carb, Headers, etc)
Thanks Guys! I've been doing some searching, but haven't found much yet

most hate the 400 but i see more and more people starting to use it, search up halogrinder he has a nice build thread where he redid a 400 to get 400hp i think.
i think they still used a dana44 and a 9" in the 80's if not someone correct me
the 400 can be modified fairly easy from the looks of what ive read up on but i never did it but i can tell you i tossed a edelbrock 4bgbl intake and carter AFB carb on it and it gave me a few more horses

the axles should be a dana 44 ttb with a ford 9in rear.
The motor most likely is the 351m which shares the block with the 400m its got mild power and they can be modified fairly easy biggest thing ive noticed with my ford in the past are very restrictive exhaust hp is typically in the range of 158 to 169 torque numbers are 262 to 276. Tcase is probably of a borg warner unit but i could be wrong or a np208. The weak link is ttb if your rockcrawling i have seen it hold up to 38s in mud but it was unlocked and it was babied a bit, however if your building a desert truck the twin traction beam and be cut and turned to produce some great travel.

TTB doesn't mean much in terms of strength, it is a HP D44, although you're pretty much on your own if you want any flex from it, nothing in the bolt-on world of liftkits flexes worth a shit (many screw the steering geometry all to hell too). Some experimenting will be needed.
A truck that old will be carbureted though. IMO, this is where the weak link is. You get on any good angles and it's usually *sputter sputter die*. I'd look for something 1987-1996 with EFI.

Thanks Guys! That info is Great, Keep it coming!
Here's the add, "1981 FORD Bronco 4WD. 400 modified. Runs, drives. Good tires. Body rough. $350"
For $350, I think that is a KILLER deal! For any vehicle that runs and drives. I'm not wanting to put this thing on the road, mostly just to slowly build up - put lower gears + 33's and use it to pull out my Samurai's when I get them stuck in Muddy farm land, surrounding my house. If you guys were me, would you be interested? It's about 30 mins away, so I don't want to go and look at it, if you guys think it may not be worth it.
Everyone's opinion is wanted!
Thanks,

The early years (80-82 I think) of that model bronco had a weaker frame but $350 for a runiing truck is a pretty good deal.
A Bronco will make a great Samuri extraction vehicle. A tractor would be better but back when I had a YJ a friend had a stock Bronco on street tires that pulled me out of mud holes where I was buried up to the frame on more then one occasion.
