PM desertoy, he may have a copy on his comp. Rules to be getting posted by we rock soon, with some clarifications as well!

Had another interested FToy competitor PM me and ask if the rules were posted somewhere. If anyone has a copy, please POST UP, at least something will be available for those folks until the FToy rules are an official part of the WE-Rock website.

Here's what I told him when he asked about chassis, frame, engine, tranny, cutting brakes:

axle placement is limited by the chassis--you can't get much shorter than 103" WB. Most "comp" FToys get set at ~104-106" WB. Practical max on a shortbed/4Runner (regular FToy) is ~110" (before your leaves stick out the ends) and F-Fours are ~115".

Can't do cutting brakes for comp, but you can have them installed, but locked out for comps. So, you get their function on the trail, but the field is level for comps.

As for chassis placement on the frame, the frame cannot be shorter than the chassis on either end. Chassis are 153" long, so your minimum frame dimension is 153" and both front and rear frame horns must be plumb under the chassis. They're almost all flush in back, most are in front--some front frames go a tad longer for winch or fairlead mounting. mine is flush both ends.

20R, 21RU, 22R or 22RE only. No 22RET turbo. Aftermarket modifications allowed, but the exterior/block must be stock. Strokers, cams, etc. OK.

Motor can be moved back 8" and down 1" from stock location. Mine is 8" back and 5/8" down.

Any '79-95 Toy pickup tranny. W56 (~85-95 EFI trucks got this tranny) is a popular, available, and strong 5-speed. Many comp rigs get a rebuilt L-52 (79-82?) 4-speed since it's about 6" shorter. With dual cases, tranny strength is a bit less important. 86-87 Turbo trucks got the R151 (same guts as Jeep AX-15) but they're rare. 89-95 V6 trucks got the R150 (same series, but not technically FToy legal since they came from V6 trucks). G52 and G54 (84-86 carb'd trucks) trannies are weaker than the W-series, and don't have the benefits the other 3 tranny options have. A couple of guys have run the A340h auto (similar to a Jeep auto--AX5??) but it's a power robber from a 4-banger.

Any locker for a Toyota 8" diff is OK. Can use e-Locker from later model TRD 4Runners and high pinion diffs/eLockers from FJ80's, since they're both based o the 8" diff. CAN NOT use the "8.4" diff from Tacomas/Tundras.

Axles can be stock or aftermarket to 6" wider than stock. Must use birfields or birf upgrades--nearly everyone runs 30 spline Longfields.

Floors are pretty open

Firewall must cover a pillar to a pillar, or must "doghouse" the motor from shock tower to shock tower.

Roof must be 20ga or 0.40 aluminum or expanded metal. Expanded metal must be welded to tubes at every point of contact

MTrunner, the roof must be 1/8"

3/8" is a little overkill, isn't it?

Thanks!

Thanks!

There is also no restriction (in the rules) for width on axles. The cones will say otherwise! FWIW, the 6 over stock limit would make us illegal.

Any updates on where to find the official rules posted? www.formulatoy.org still not working. Currently Working on the floorpan/firewall. What about Trans tunnel (fully encased/ not required)? Rules on Driveshaft loops? Just trying to build it comp ready for this season. Really dont want to show up and not be legal.

It sucks the website is gone but here are a few things to keep you going.

Trans tunnel not required.
Driveshaft loop is required.
Firewall has to go from edge to edge of chassis or be a dog house style up to the motor mounts.
Engine Cover/Hood is required.
Master disconnect switch for wiring must be installed on the dash.
CatchCans/Overflow cans need to be installed too.
Remember to give yourself 3" of headroom with your helmet on. (Drivers seat only)
Install a window net.

WEROCK rules require a trans tunnel. We may get lumped in under that one.

I was very concerned about not passing tech at my first comp. In my opinion WEROCK will work with you on minor items but would not tolerate an obvious safety issue.

Not sure about the trans tunnel. Talked to Big about the pass. seats being at the same height as the drivers (like the stock mods), and he said we didn't have to follow that rule, since it doesn't pertain to the original ftoy rules. He said the engine covering, firewall, roof, hood, and driveline loop were required.

As far as I know the rule on a trans tunnel is IF you run an auto trans you WILL need a full tunnel for a standered trans you can leave it open

If you are actually being slowed down by the rules, contact me. I will be glad to answer any questions that you may have until WE Rock comes out with their rules.
I have the current rules in my computer.

John, would you mind posting them with the caveat that
some rules may change with their integration with WE-Rock rules?

There's a lot of stuff in the FToy class rules that would help a new builder put their car together, or at least have it in the back of their mind. Yeah, it's all in people's build threads, and anyone who has been lurking this forum would know 95% of them...but take someone like DRM who just built a chassis and probably hasn't been lurking the past 3 years.

I don't expect that the rules that Big may change/add will be earth shaking or change the way a car is built....just assuming it will be more safety/fuel/net/shielding/helmet/firesuit related?!

edit: I've put mine together with good intentions, and not trying to exploit any gray areas....but I'm sure there are things I've overlooked. I'm hoping I could have you or someone else who was on the FToy BOD take a peek over my car @ KOH and give me some suggestions/constructive criticicsm.
I referred to the rules at least weekly throughout '08 as I was putting mine together, FWIW.

I would rather just e-mail them to the people that really need them so I don't have to hear all the BS from the masses.
As soon as WE Rock copies them to their website and incorporates their rules to them, they will get posted.

If you are building an F-Toy and need a copy of the current rules. Just let me know and I will send them to you.

Thanks for sending me the rules, John. Very helpful in forumlating the general direction needed for building something near to comp. specs, with the understanding some items may change.

And like MT4Runner said - VERY useful knowing where to even start.
