correctable is when you fix it and have it signed off. now you do not have to fix it and do not have to have a chp oficer sign it off, just have to pay the huge fine.....but you better fix it too, so you don't get another ticket.
ticket is called a .............27600vc:flipoff2:
Hawaii500_1999 08-13-2002, 10:43 AM shoot i got one 6 monthes ago at a park and ride. i wasn't even freaking there!!!!
it turned out that it was a parking ticket!!
how do you get a parking ticket for mud flaps. i was so mad.
they wouldn't let me correct it because it was a parking ticket they said. i could only challenge it.
man thats a load of bull shit, you go the ticket before the law was changed right? i would call a lawyer. $78 bucks is a lot of  money

Lawyer is more then $76 and I have no idea when the law changerd.....
So why not just run mudflaps while on road and then you don't have to worry about it. That's what we do here in Pa. Bolts with wing nuts and you can have your flaps off in a min or two.

Cause mudflaps are:rainbow: and unecessary unless there is mud. I know in Az the law only pertains to "lifted trucks". What determines that you have them in Ca?

I do run flaps:rolleyes: I was on my way up to a guys house to build the flatbed and quick connect flaps.....the grip I have is that they were a write off fix it ticket, now even though I fixed it I am stuck with a $76 fee cause the law changed. + the guy said I need full flares in the front, which would not be so easy to do....look:D

Mudflaps are only :rainbow: on the trail.(But I don't run 'em either;) )They do serve a purpose,as many a cracked windshield can attest to...
I believe they apply to every vehicle ('cept maybe tractors?)that has tires sticking out "past the fenders" at all.I've always had good luck, but I don't drive my junk everyday.

I believe it has to do with kicking up rocks and blasting the car behind you and also water spray (when and if we ever get any friggin rain out here). I ran em on my Willys, wide enough to cover the width of the tires and long enough to cover 2/3rds of the height of the tire from behind. Never had a problem. I attracted a lot of cops attention just because it looks so 'different' but never cited. Even had a CHP stop behind me on the freeway (ran outta gas) on the way back from the Con. He asked me what the problem was. I told him I ran outta gas and I was transferring some from my jerry can and would be on my way in a few minutes. He did call in my license plates for a check but of course, it was clean. He asked me what kinda vehicle it was anyway. Then told me to signal when ready and he helped me get rolling again by pulling out in traffic with lights on and staying there till I got up to speed. Then he waved and took off. I'm pretty sure he would have given me some grief if not for the flaps. I made em outta some old conveyer belt material and put em on a quick release setup... Actually, they're not a bad idea. I don't wanna be responsible for taking out someone's windshield anyway... :D:D:D
yeah we are free in this country right. don't get me wrong im a tried and true american but this is the knida of bull sh*t that i can not stand. We pay out the ass for taxes and all kinds of sh*t and we have to get tickets for dumbass mud flaps. Seems a little retarded right?

Mudflaps only help with water and mud NOT rocks. Every itty bitty car or motorcycle tire will kick up rocks. Our tread voids are too large to pick up anything on the street and tire hight doesn't mean shit. Cars throw just as many rocks as trucks if not more with the less void on there tires. I lost a headlight to a lowered Impala once:( , It happens. So stop saying we throw rocks, it's not just us.
So what requires an auto to need mudflaps in Ca? I know state laws are different on alot of things.

I just got this ticket plus the one for flares. The cop told me that half of the tire (vertically) must be covered with either flares or mudflaps. Have you ever seen a car that had over half the way exposed? I don't like it either but it's for a good reason. The comment a couple posts up about lug size is bogus. I run 38" TSL's and kick rocks everywhere. And the water spray is way nasty. Of course I don't need to worry about waterspray because it hasn't rained in my area since 1997 (only a slight exageration).:D

I guess it depends on what tires your using. My 35" MT/R's have voids that are perfect for 3/4 rock. My driveway is 120' of 3/4 rock- I'd bet the tires carry 10 to 20 stones out to the road every time I leave. There fallin' out all the way out the the hwy- a good 1/4 mile. I hate my big ass mud flaps, but since I drive a truck, not a 'Runner, (AZ law will let the 'Runner guy's get by w/ out flaps 'cause they are registered as a "station wagon" ) I'm stuck with'm. Your right about cars tho, I've been whacked w/ rocks off cars/vans- but I'm sure I've busted a couple windshields too :D

27600. No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread. tommybronco 08-13-2002, 06:49 PM OOP's just so i understood that right. It means since my bronco is a 67 they cannot give me a ticket since it was made and registered befor 71. If this is so that is great for me. :D :D

A couple years ago I was sitting in my truck in the local Taco Bell parking lot grubbin' on a burrito. A Concord cop walked over to me and started giving me a lecture about my tires throwing up rocks and such. He then issued me a mudflap ticket. I wasn't too concerned about it, just hadn't put my flaps back on after the last wheeling trip. When I went to have it signed off I found out that it was a fine on top of having to show proof of correction! I couldn't find anything specific in the California vehicle code that talked about a fine for mudflaps, but to take the time off work to go to court, etc. wouldn't be worth it.
I have been pulled over twice since then and was not hassled about my lack of flaps.
Later,

He checked correctable.........lady from the court on the phone said "cops don't know it changed" I called my cop buddy, he didn't know either, but I asked the lady "can I go to court and get it kicked out cause the box is checked" she says " you could try" doh! fuck it, it's a 6 hour drive round trip!
RUGER 08-13-2002, 11:12 PM i kinda deserved my mud flap ticket. if you drove behind me you could see the top of my 35's.
i got a day off from work to deal with my flaps: i got some flaps and bolted them on. the pd wouldn't sign them off because i needed flaps in the front. this pissed my off. i headed over to kragen to pickup some flaps for the front...i idled though the parking lot and said fawk it and headed over to the chp. they signed them off no problem.
the officer that gave me the ticket said i didn't have to pay anything since it's a fix it ticket...cost me $10. if i didn't get the ticket signed off (5 days from when i did) it would of been $76. i also lost a day's wage too.

It doesn't say anything about covering it verticaly, so a full width flap, 6" tall would be legal. They don't spell out what adequate protection, is leaving it up to you:D.

toyzilla 08-14-2002, 01:21 PM I carry a copy of the VC with me in my glove box. When I have been pulled over, I take it out and ask them, "What am I not doing right that is in the VC." SeaBass44 08-14-2002, 09:07 PM Use of Recut or Regrooved Tires
27461. No person shall cause or permit the operation of and no driver shall knowingly operate any motor vehicle except a commercial vehicle, on any street or highway, which is equipped with one or more recut or regrooved tires. For purposes of this section a recut or regrooved tire is an unretreaded or unrecapped tire into which new grooves have been cut or burned.
Added Ch. 1518, Stats. 1965. Effective September 17, 1965.
So all us with grooved tires are illeagal too:rolleyes:
The flap law here in Pa for safety inspection is as follows:
(i) Rear Wheel Shields - Trucks shall be constructed or equipped to bar water or other road surface substances thrown from the rear wheels of the vehicle at tangents exceeding 22.5*, measured from road surface, from passing in a straight line to the rear of the vehicle.
There are tons of vehicles running around without flaps and I haven't heard of anybody getting cited for it.
SeaBass44 08-19-2002, 11:58 AM My CHP friend says that it';s BS, he looked up the flap law and it IS CORRECTABLE, so he is writing a letter to the court for me, so I'm not paying a fine at this time.....we will see what happens.
4wd Wolf 08-19-2002, 12:31 PM Seabass: If you are driving a truck (or pickup) then you have a commercial vehicle, therefore your grooved tires are okay. On my 4Runners and your Sami though, we're screwed.

sorry to dig up an old post, but did you get out of it? whats the deal?
I had to go to court last month for a vc 27600+ (aka no flaps) and the judge told me it was gonna be $110 and i had to go to traffic school even though i had shown him pics of my flaps on the truck, so i asked him why i had to go to traffic school even though it wasnt a moving violation. That stumped the hell outta him because he went in his chambers with an officer (aka pig) and came out about 5 minutes later and said "How does ten bucks sound?" I was stoked!!!! No traffic school and a hundred bucks cheaper.
So i have to go again this wed. the 7th for the same thing. another vc 27600, and hopefully i will have the same results.

So i guess that means you really do have ADD? Or you are just too fawking stupid to take the hint? :flipoff2:
In WA you need to have the whole width of the tire covered, sidewall included and down to the centerline of the axle. The flaps also need to be within 6 inches of the tire. Its not too bad and only part of the flapped trucks look really stupid with them on:D

booboo 04-06-2004, 12:48 AM the law's been that way in cowifornia for a few years

newport beach is a notorius place
pigs are REAL BAD there
so he comes back to my truck and says them lites haf to be 1 candlepower...
then he asks me how many candlepower i thot his blue lites were
i dazzled him again by knowing sumthing about candlepower
(since i read the figures on sum off road lite boxes)
:D :D :D :D
my lites were freeking little hood washer lites
i coulda argued they WERE only 1 canlepower...
duzn't say anything about how big a candle in the code
i woulda won
or got put in jail for contempt

moron sed zero about my lack of flaps, flares, or 4 100 watt uncovered illegal lites on the roof

i went on my merry way with my blue lites off
he seemed disappointed tho
i'd relish showing em up in court
they tortured peepl i know
the d a can biteme too
law enforcement my road apple
at least you didn't get beat unconscious
yeah i guess so huh? Well i wont take them off anymore because officer peltler said that if he catches me again with them off he will impound my rig and arrest me for operating a motor vehicle unsafly after being warned of the violation by a peace officer....

I read the code. it was INTENDED that you couldn't REgroove a tire after it had been worn out. retreads OK. the way it reads however sounds like you can't groove them yourself, even if they're new. However it does say REgroove, and your not REgrooving anything, your grooving. I don't think this is an issue.
chartdog 04-06-2004, 10:43 AM Most of our rigs have more than a few equipment violations; lift height, exhaust, and lights, not to mention steering systems that are possibly not "DOT Approved".
If we were really into safety and took driving seriously (since it is the easiest way to get killed this side of Iraq) we would all probably trailer our rigs.
Most of us can’t, don’t want to or whatever and choose to drive them on the street knowing full well that we are pushing it and could get the dreaded fix it ticket or have to pay a fine now and then.
The cops do their thing and when it comes to modified vehicle laws, many of them are not experts either. Mud flaps are easy and they can serve the enforcement purpose when the officer is targeting a truly modified rig and not just being anal with a 2” lift on 33s mild rig.
Is it always fair, of course not. Is it a fact of life, absolutely.
To the whiners and whoever said “pig” stick it in your ear, grow up and learn to deal with stuff. We all know we are doing it just like the guy who locks the cruise control in at 90 on I-5. Every now and then you get a ticket for that too and I hope you don’t whine when you get caught at 20 over. Suck it up and pay more attention next time and you may not get caught.
Anyway I did just put my flame suit on, I do drive my modified rig on the street knowing full well that it has violations and even though I have been a police officer for almost 30 years I have not yet had to use the badge to get out of a ticket, at least not one like we are talking about.

#1 curtisy to others
#2 keep the law at bay
#3 my bad luck I get to pay a big fine while others get a fix it???????

Now sickfab, his brain may in fact be made of shit but this is a free country and he is entitled to his opinion. It is kind of cool that thanks to a quality military and quality law enforcement at home any moron can excercise his rights here even if his message is foolish.

turbrotoy 04-06-2004, 06:46 PM I got a flap ticket cruising the rose parade route this last new years.I figure I diserved it for being there.Only cost 10.00 bucks. Most cops in so cal will not give you this ticket. There are way too many more morons out here to bother with a mud flap ticket. The chp cop told me to take the distance from center of the tire to the back of the bed then 1/3 of that is how far off the ground it has to be.Im not planing on running flaps 10.00 bucks is nothing:D

Just a little advice... in the world of law enforcement there is a thing known as an "attitude adjustment citation"... give the cop attitude, and it gets adjusted, treat em' with respect, and USUALLY it will be returned... you may already have a reputation in Newport Beach, in that case, good luck! Cops have a LONG memory for that stuff.
I am not saying that cops are always fair, but the above works more times than not.
booboo 04-06-2004, 09:37 PM well humperdink,
i hav zero respect for self serving legislators that think they got sum right to tell me wut to do wen i mind my own biznuss harming no one
and i hav same zero respect for their little lackeys in law enforcement
who as chartdog stated, hav no respect for the law unless it suits em...
hypocritical authority figures
real nice
but i'll stick with my principles and integrity
and they'll bite it wen they get polygraphed !
cuz pigs gotta lot to hide
and a lot to fear
and as already exhibited, go off at the mere mention of the word pig
i've been called much worse than that
and had no need to reply
the loon duzn't even know who or wut i'm talking about
how could he know how piggish anyone's actions were?
and yet he makes blanket assumptions
and is defending true scum of the urth
there's yor self righteous authority figure

thenodnarb 04-06-2004, 10:17 PM the spelling offends me more than the statement!:flipoff2:
its sad how poor spelling can make someone look completely ignorant. I understand though, a bad experience with a cop has soured his view on them. (I too have had a bad experience with one, but HE is the only one I don't like.)
OK all law enforcement officers speak up: what DO you care about when you see a highly modified rig on the road. also, im sure you know many officers who arn't in tune with the offroad scene. how do your more *ahem* "strict" collegues feel about a highly modified rig on the road?

Nobody thinks you can't spell...everybody knows you can't spell. Maybe apply some of that education our tax dollars paid for...then we might not dismiss your experiences and opinions on the grounds that your inability to compose a coherent paragraph is any evidence of your sheer and utter stupidity.
Maybe if you spent as much time challenging yourself in 3rd grade as you do 'challenging authority,' you'd be able to write better than a 2nd grader. Congradulations, dude...you're a dumbass!

hey dipshit...I worked for the police department here in Santa Barbara for almost a year. it's dipshits like you who go around bad mouthing shit that gets cops pissed off and help to create the situations you are complaining about. you are either a real "hard core" rich white boy (basically what newport beach is full of) trying to act cool by dissing the "pigs", or the "harassment" you received was probably warented (sp?). and don't give me any shit saying, "u wuldn't no cuz u never been here". lived and traveled through the area for many years so fawk off.
just because you think you "stood up to the man" does not make you more free than any one of us here. I can gurandamntee that there are people here with more spine and cahones then you will ever have. whooptie fawking do, you knew more about a blue light than a cop or knew more about some other vehicle code. talk to me when you are taking bullets in some far off country for something you truely believe in. talk to me when someone is disrespecting you for the color of your skin and you take it because you are a better person and wont stoop to their level. it's retards like you who are the root of most of the decay of this country.
finally, I would like to say that if you honestly believe you can spell...something is really wrong in your head. the only reason I can even remotely make out what the hell you said was because I have 9 cousins all under the age of 7. please take the advice of all those on this board and learn some damn english.

With regards to the subject, I've been pulled over a couple times for mudflaps, both times I've managed to skate out of a ticket. I do agree with the attitude you give the cops. I treat every cop I meet with respect and most of the time that respect is returned. They have a tough job that is often underappreciated, and they do it the best they can.

I wasn't actually a police officer. I helped out the UCSB campus police with campus security and the like. it was only for about 6 months but I gained a whole new appreciation for the shit that cops have to take from fuckwads like booboo
Now that some of you fucksticks have ruined this thread i will try and salvage the original topic of mudflaps.
I just got back from court about 20 minutes ago for a 27600 (no flaps) mind you, this was my second appearance in court in the last 2 months with the same judge for no flaps. All i did was show him the same pics as the first time of my rig with the flaps on and i walked out with only a ten dollar fine.
Also note that i have been pulled over 16 times in the last year and a half for no flaps. Only had to pay a fine of 10 bucks twice.
