: Will a built Dana 300 hold up or should I use a NP205
rthill97tj 11-24-2008, 06:20 AM I am building a YJ with a 350, SM465, Dana 60, 14 bolt, 42" Iroks, stretch rear to length of TJ unlimited and have decided on everything except the transfer case. I already have both so purhcasing is no problem but either will have to be built. This is my first build other than a TJ and I am not really familiar with either. I have done plenty of searches but I want real world "which one will hold up and give more bang for the buck"?
LucasFury 11-24-2008, 06:34 AM The 300 has a lower crawl ratio than the NP205 and is plenty strong.. Sure the 205 is stronger, but the 300 can hold its own just fine if you keep the fluid fresh.
..Or since you asked this question in the Hardcore section, go for the AtlasII.
peteygjr1 11-24-2008, 07:18 AM just thought i'd ask if thier is a difference in the bolt pattern between the ford and gm 205 for mating to the trans. in question :)
JR650 11-24-2008, 08:20 AM Depends how hot the 350 is, Id say the 300 will hold well with a fairly warm 350, but the 205 will not break without taking the rest of the truck with it. 205 has a crappy low range and is heavier by about 50 lbs if memory serves. I would go with the 300 with upgraded outputs unless you are over 400ish horsepower and have whiskey throttle syndrome. Do the twin stick rail mods if you do run the 205. The 205 will serve you well with no money invested (fixed yoke rear?) and about an hour or so to do the rail mod.
rthill97tj 11-24-2008, 09:44 AM appreciate the info so far. I plant to do the low gear upgrade to the Np205 (np205 - JBconversion 3.0:1). As to the Atlas I had one in my last TJ (3.8:1 style) and for the price difference of building one of these I just didn't car for it that much. I gave $50 for the NP205 transfer case and will still only have near $1,300 after all the upgrades with the sales JBconversions is having and would have near that in the 300 fully built. Just my opinion.
dan58 11-24-2008, 10:04 AM The 300 will be fine. Put deep gears in the diffs, and it'll be happy.
cmthomas 11-24-2008, 12:33 PM The 205 will not break without taking the rest of the truck with it.
The 205 has my vote. My buddy just broke the case of his D300 and is now out everything he put into it.
WildWilly4x4 11-24-2008, 01:57 PM go 205 if it'll fit. 300 needs lots of upgrades to handle a 350. I just snapped the output in my 300 w/a 4.3 last weekend. There goes another $450 for 32 spline shaft, where the 205 comes w/em stock if you get the right one. 205 is way cheaper in the long run, if you dont need the gearing, and have plenty of driveshaft/frame room.
masonmachines 11-24-2008, 03:19 PM What about a 203/205 doubler? :stirthepot:
To what extent are you planning on building either case?
moggie 11-24-2008, 04:15 PM I like the 300, but you can upgrade it all you want and the case itself will eventually become the weak link.
Marc Daniels 11-24-2008, 05:23 PM Stock clocked twin sticked 205/w a klune 4.1 in front, thats what will be going into mine with the ls1 swap.
motofast28 11-24-2008, 05:34 PM Im running a 383 with 44's with a dana 300 with 4 to 1 and hd outputs and a 32 spline input. I love it but I have around 1200 to 1400 in mine i wish i would have bought a stak ( their look a lot nice:grinpimp:)
big'in 12-02-2008, 02:44 PM well to each his/her own... I'm running the 300 ... 4 to 1 kit, 32 spline kit... detroit diesel and more tourqe than most people will ever see.... dana 60 /14 bolt . 44 swampers...... hummin right along.....love the room under the floor :smokin: friend's who have had the 205 or any of the bigger cases have broke adapters and transmission cases.... alot of weight hanging out there.. very few people support the properly
srsgsxr1000 12-02-2008, 03:19 PM 205 all the way! I just finished building my Lo-max 205, and by the time you buy everything including twins, rebuild kit, 3-1, etc. you will have about $1500 in it. But you will have a t-case that with proper maintanance should never break. If i have the room, i prefer a 205 over an Atlas "and i have owned 2". The only down side is the added weight, but unless your competing then its not that big of a deal.
I was running a twin stick 300 behind a 454/350 60/14B TSL 44s. After it exploded, I went with a stak. BTW, the 300 did have a rear support.
pyrocrat 12-02-2008, 07:02 PM Your building what I'm building except for the body , and with a granny geared sm465 ,you have a 6 to 1 first , so the 1.96 to 1 of a 205 doesn't really matter .
Low axle gears and perhaps a 203 crawl box "if you must" and you won't have to ask anybody else about this and you can pass on the word of reliability and just wheel you stuff .

Are you building the Jeepster in your sig.If so lets see some pics.
As far as D300 or 205 I would run the 205 and save up for a Stak or Atlas. That's what I am doing.
