My Flatfender project is taking shape but, I need some help on rear offset axle options. I'm currently SOA using Wrangler Springs and motor wise have a Ford 302 with C-5 auto and Dana 18 transfer case with o/d. I have a 61" dana 44 front coming and now am trying to decide on a offset rear option. I want 5on5.5 lug pattern and am only going to run 35's. I'm looking for ideas for the best bang for the buck. If I go a Waggy 44, what's the best way to build it? Thanks

One problem with the waggy 44's is that the flange pattern is different from most other 44's which will keep you from running full float.....if that's even an issue.

Yeah, that is a problem as I might flat tow it and would like that option. What else is out there to use? I would like to stay 30 spline dana 44 as I have both a ARB and a Detroit to use plus a 5.38 ring and pinion sitting in a box. Has anybody taken a narrow offset Dana 44 and lengthend just the tubes to get it around 60"?

just a thought, but if you are going to use a custom length anyway, couldn't you just take the waggy housing cut the flanges off, and weld on your flanges from the narrow track housing you have?

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning toward doing. I talked to Dutchman and they only like doing 9" stuff as far as altering housings along with Currie. Thanks for your help.

Just use a wide track axle.....the one on my zuk is about 62" wide!

I have 5.38's and an arb in it!

Use a Waggy 44 that was run with a Q-track. There's your offset. Heck, i have two or three of them kicking around.

Rudezuk & Grendel: I know about offset Waggy axles, I'm just looking for ways to 1) Run a full floater kit (which I have for a narrow dana44) 2) run disc brakes and 3) Just beef it up somewhat for the power the motor puts out. I'm getting a waggy front with 5 on 5.5 so that too has to be addressed for the rear. Yeah, I can get a waggy rear and have Currie or Dutchman put 9" ends with all the rest of Ford stuff but I'm looking for anybody else that has pieced one together without spending a $1,000 bucks or more to do it. I've already have 30 spline lockers to put in . So, I'm leaning toward putting my axle housing on the waggy 44 and having Dutchman make me some longer shafts unless there is anything else out there to do. I appreciate your input

What i did was i sent my axles out to have the 5x5.5 put on the ends, then i used an 88 IFS 1/2 ton light duty front rotor and redrilled it for 5x5.5,,,,,

Then you get the rear disk bracket kit...and you put on late 80's chevy malibu calipers................................you are in business then!
Forget the full floater.....Just buy a damn trailer!

and to think you can just use chevy 1/2 ton front rotors ;)http://thisdysfunctional.org/mike/Pictures/d44.jpg

Rudezuk & Mike: Thanks, that is a big help. I'm picking up a Waggy rear on Saturday to start. I appreciate all your input, Mike

BTW, to flat tow I'd just pull the rear shaft. I know too many folks that had problems with the rear hubs. Donno why.. but seems to be that way

Not exactly low buck, but there's a guy here in Michigan with a custom built Ford 9", off set for an Early 5 with a Dana 18, not sure on total width, but it's got 4.56 gears with a Strange spool, 35 spline Moser shafts, disk brakes, yada, yada, yada, set up for SOA in a '67 CJ-5, I think he wants $1000 or $1200 for it.

Aaron, Thanks for the tip. I would be curious as to what the width is. I'm guessing it is probably too narrow but, you never know. Can you track him down or give me some info on him? My e-mail address is mike5krnr@yahoo.com if you want to pass it on. Mike
