: 4bt+S120=...we'll see
WillsCustoms 11-24-2008, 04:29 PM My dad pulled me to the side yesterday and asked me what i thought of putting a 4bt and trans in our restored S120 4x4. It looks like I'm on the search. Seems like it would be more efficient then the old BD240 gas 6 cyl.
larboc@hotmail.com 11-24-2008, 04:54 PM can't be done.

Go for it. In about a week Frito Lay is auctioning off about 300 stepvans on Dovebid. It seems like there are lots of 4bts for sale in the southwest. I currently have another 4bt en route from North Carolina.

Mechanos 11-24-2008, 07:35 PM I'd look around for a 4bta if I were going to do the swap.

I need to clean my engine.
Actually I'm doing it for somebody else, replacing an SD33T. Bring yours up to spokane, along with a blank check and I'll put you next in line.:smokin:

There's pics around somewhere on the web of a guy that shoehorned a 6bt or 6bta in an SII. Very tight fit totally unnecessary for a Scout IMO.

Meh.
Buy whatever good runner is available with the type of flywheel housing you want. The only difference on the actual engine between a 4bt and 4bta is the shape of the intake manifold. You can run an air-to-air on either one.

cool idea and good engine but you just about have the room of a modern fullsize, don't you think something with a bit more power would be better

I say if it is to be a tow rig ya gotta go with the 6bt. But just for a driver the 4bt will be kick ass on mileage and should have plenty-o-guts.
BTW I'll probably be jealous of either.:flipoff2:
WillsCustoms 11-25-2008, 03:54 PM We'll the truck has been restored and we never use it cause of some little thing here and there withthe original bd engine. Tired of it and tired of the 55mph top speed and needing 5 miles of open road to pull out in front of someone... What trans do those step vans come with? I have the 4 speed in the IH, but want to do engine and trans because it has a divorced t-case. I will still get my great low gears out of my IH tcase and if i could find a 7 speed mated to a 4bt it would be awesome!
Hey on replacing the sd33t, what did you do to mate the 4bt to the stock trans/bellhousing?

johnrv4 11-25-2008, 04:18 PM Look at the details of the upcoming auction on Dovebid. I think they are taking sealed bids on the whole lot of trucks for a specific area (which would suck). That would mean you couldn't bid on individual trucks. :-(

Some also had the SM465. Really, though, as long as you can get a transmission with a SAE bellhoushing, you can concievable bolt up whatever you want behind it. Cummins has a repower tech support number that you can call and they can help you figure out all sort of different trans combinations using off the shelf parts.
TERRA-IZER 11-25-2008, 05:47 PM I'am sure your stock S-120 has some pretty low gears in it 4.88's are so, i would forget the 4-speed and install something with a overdrive or your top speed will not be much higher then you currently are with the stock set up. The 4bt's don't like to pull high RPMs they are goved pretty low same with the 6BT's. On my little 1937 D-15 street rod with 27" tall rear tires its getting a NV4500 and 3.07:1 gears to keep the 4bt in the RPM range it likes to run.
jeep937 11-25-2008, 06:17 PM That's your truck! Make a thread and post pics please. I saw some vids a while back of it.:smokin::homer::mr-t:
CSmith 11-25-2008, 08:06 PM Use an overdrive transmission when you do the swap. Consider it mandatory.
TERRA-IZER 11-25-2008, 08:38 PM jeep937, i think you are thinking of the 4bt power rat rod its a chevy, mine has full fenders and not on the road yet, still in the building stage and on hold till i get my 1942 K-2 street rod going.
jeep937 11-25-2008, 11:59 PM Still post. or link to build on H.A.M.B. Sounds sick.
WillsCustoms 11-26-2008, 06:28 PM Here is a pic of the s120 along with the others.. http://forum.ih8mud.com/members/bigwill-albums-my-cruisers.html
Im gonna check out that auction tonight... planned on an overdrive trans, but didnt realize they came with small trannys. It would be nice to mate up a HD trans like a 7 speed or so behind it...
TERRA-IZER 11-26-2008, 09:02 PM You can get factory adapters to run the big truck trannys. Any adapter for a 6BT will bolt to the 4BT.
