I was wondering if anyone has adapted a AW4 to a 2.5. I have a Comanche with a 2.5 and want to put a automatic behind it and really don't want to run a 904. I really don't drive it on the street that much mainly just a trailrig. Thanks

Early 2.5s (1987ish) came with the AW4. You'll need the bellhousing to adapt any AW4 to your engine. Then you have to figure out the automatic shifting.

I can help with the shift controller. Stand alone shifters for the AW4, no TCM required.

Was that aw4 to 2.5 in XJs and MJs? I thought they only used the 904 behind the 2.5s.

R Des, I like the controller. If I figure out this swap I will be in contact.

I put the AX-15 behind the 2.5L and it was pretty straight forward. As for the AW4 I don't really know but do you really want a automatic behind an already anemic 2.5L?

Very few came from the factory. 2.5L/AW4 combo came with 4.56 gears. I've seen 2 both were 89's. JIM

Sounds like a hard find. Tgoff do you have a write up on this. I need something stronger than an ax4. I really don't want to break the tranny on the trails so I need to do something.

good luck with the auto behind the 4 banger......
find an early xj.........all the 4cylender xjs had auto's .iirc.
205s are 27 spline...............
dana 300 would be a way better choice.

I've got an AW4 behind my 2.5L YJ. Easiest way to find one is www.car-part.com. Search for an 89 XJ 2.5L with auto. There seemed to be more of them used in 2wd xj/mj, so you might be able to just get the yard to send the bellhousing like I did. If you want a tcu send me a PM, I'm using an AWShifting controller and the TCU isn't in the jeep any more.
The TCU is different, and the only flexplate available is for Renix motors, so if you have a 91 or newer XJ 2.5L you'll need to do something custom with the flexplate. On mine I used a 999 flexplate and redrilled it for the AW4 convertor. The torque convertor is also specific to the 2.5L version. You also need to make sure you get or make a crank bushing to properly support the convertor. I tore the center out of my first flexplate within 200 miles after neglecting that step.
The tranny that was used behind the 2.5 had fewer clutches with thicker steels, but I've had no issues using the 4.0L configuration of clutches and steels.

After chewing up the 1st and second 200K+ trannies I spent $140 on a master rebuild kit. Been solid ever since

Thanks Oldjeep that helps a ton. How is yours power wise. Mine with the ax4 manual will run 65 with 36in. swampers and 5.13 gears on the flat highway. Don't know what it would do with the aw4 but I hardly ever drive it on the highway or the street. Thanks

Powerwise it's OK, but would be better with your gearing. If you go for one of the manual controls it helps a lot since you can keep the revs up where they want to be.
I run 35's with 4.10 gears and rarely use 4th gear. It travels fine at 65, but struggles up hill at that speed - much like it did with the ax5. Crawling on the trail, I've got no complaints.

I have a write up and there is one on pirate which I got most of my info from. All of the write-ups I used are linked to in the thread below. AX-15 are pretty easy to find and the gear ratios are similar to the AX-5. I have no complaints about my swap so far. You can expect to use the NOVAK adapters transfer case shift kit or something similar because the stock kit is junk. Input spline count will be 23 vrs 21 so either swap cases or inputs. Anyway its all in the write up.
