I know this has proably been asked several times, but I'm not have any luck with the search. I'm a newbie and by my profile you'll see I have a jeep. This question is for my father who is a big ih fan owning a 58 a120, 63 1600, 66 1500. In the 66 1500 at this time it has a 265 6 cylinder. This is a special truck from what we can tell it is 1 1/2 ton truck with a 8 foot bed and duals rear axle is a 2 speed with what we can tell appears to be about 8:1 in low axle. With that kind of axle ratio it will barely do 50 mph. So he is looking to upgrade and is wondering which v8 would better fit the truck to go down the road a little faster. The truck had no bed and is used for pulling a flatbed trailer that I've seen about 11,000 lbs on. Sorry for the long post, I'd appeciate any input between the two engines

Neither engine will make it go faster -- Speed is a product of gearing.

But technically the 304 has a higher max rpm rating then the 345... So you 'could' drive faster with the 304.

The Binder bulletin has a lot more IH specific information as we like to make everything into an off road machine:evil:

Either engine is fine, the trick would be to find one in good shape, unless he is going to rebuild it. I like the 345. Both the 345 and 392 were used in the bigger trucks.

You can add a gear vendors overdrive unit too.
