Okay, so the water pump on my'78 Scout has started leaking, and I figure this would be a good opportunity to play with the fan.

I currently have a stock fixed blade fan, but wonder if I could see an improvement in power/economy/whatever if I swap it for something else.

I've heard more than a few people say that flex blade fans suck... and since I live in AZ, keeping the 345 cool is kind of important.

I've been thinking about electric fans, possibly thermostatically controlled (if I'm feeling ambitious, if not, just always on, with a switch for water crossings, etc), or else maybe a clutch type of fan using original parts from a IH vehicle that was equipped with one.

What do you guys reccomend? Any thoughts or input?

all i have is an electric fan, works fine. upgrade your radiator and get a clutch style fan with a godo shroud and all should be good to go, jiMMy

keep the fixed blade fan. i have one off a IMCA race car good up to 7000RPM and it will suck small kids and birds to the grill:) :)

i had an electric setup but did not like it....

what was it about the electric setup that you didn't like?

I've got dual electrics on my setup cuz my fan kept sucking into my radiator. It doesn't do as well and I'm going to see if I can put a mechanical back in there.

Sully,

I just went through this on my Scout. With a 3 core rad an electric just barely fit and had trouble keeping things cool at idle. You can only fit one large fan 16" or two smaller 10" fans. There simply was not enough air flow from the fans. You could run a Ford Tarus fan and build a custom shroud, talk to Old Scout I think this is the setup he plans to run.

After all was said and done I bought a Flex-a-lite fixed racing fan with a 4 core HE rad. I'd recommend staying with a 3 core should you need to replace the rad. Without a shroud it'll hold the temps down (granted not AZ heat). The shroud will be installed shortly after some changes to auto tranny cooler and should help to keep cooling in check.

Joes right. I running a Taurus fan in stock diesel scout shroud. There is very little room to use a big fan. I will need to re drill my motor mounts a move the engine back an inch to make it fit. Moving the engine back is not as hard as it sounds.
