: I'm calling it a paperweight

I've been working on this thing most of the semester. Should be done by xmas, and the unfinished back end will be interchangeable for compressed air or powder.

It was a stainless .38-40 barrel from HS precision, one of the guys bought a bunch of random mistakes and drops when he worked there. It's a .393 bore on the lands, and I'll be shooting .375 balls with a .010 patch. Don't know what kind of powder yet for sure, most likely fuse ignition.

edit, forgot to caption pictures.

My brother built one almost like that when he was a sophomore or junior in high school shop class. Was one of those projects with retarded tolerances for what it is like +- 0.0005"

bobbo27
11-28-2008, 10:55 AM
There will definitely be videos, even my instructors want to see them

We have like 6 of those surface grinders, and I'm pretty sure nobody uses them for anything. Last year some guys did knife blades with them.

The way my class is set up, this is pretty much my own deal. Since I designed it, drew it all up in SW, the tolerances are whatever I want :grinpimp:

how did you attach the pivot pin to the barrel?

bobbo27
11-28-2008, 03:18 PM
3/4" diam pins are pressed 1/2" into the side of the barrel. They're at least .0005 over, probably closer to .001 over, so they shouldnt be going anywhere.

What does the whole thing weigh?

bobbo27
12-06-2008, 04:30 PM
Don't know what it weighs, maybe 10lbs? I'll have to bring it home and weigh it.

Here's some more progress pictures, Drilling the holes in the end to bolt the back end on. There will be 6 1/4-20 bolts almost an inch into the barrel.

The piece that isnt polished in these pictures is cut off now, and will be made into the compressed air connection. I was going to press and weld a plug in the bore, until a guy offered a chunk of solid stainless to make the other back end.

You should use shotgun primers for ignition.

bobbo27

I thought about using a primer, but I couldn't think of a good mechanism to strike it.

just a simple striker that uses a hammer similar to what would be on a blackpowder rifle (to use shotgun primers you would need a bastard setup like some S&W revolvers.) You could even use No.11 caps with a nipple.

Edit: If you used a hammer you could make it be held back with a pin with a string attached to release it to make it more like firing an old cannon.

Looks good, a buddy of mine is making something similar, but with a much larger bore, enough to fit a soda can or tennis ball. It's also made of stainless 304.

bobbo27
12-08-2008, 06:53 PM
I would have liked to make it bigger, but so far all the material was free :grinpimp:

I'll have to think about the primer ignition... it's probably not as hard as I'm thinking.

I'll have the compressed air part done tomorrow, hopefully the whole thing will be finished this week.

Compressed air pieces are done, and the crown. I have the program for the other back piece done and tested, just need to run it on the stainless chunk.

Even with shop air it does some damage, and I still might do some more fine tuning with that setup.

The breach? I actually just stopped it halfway thru the program like that. It was going to go past the counterbores to a straight line to the bolt heads, curve and then taper out to the cannon diameter. I decided it looked fawkin cool where it was.

I was going to weigh the thing, but it turns out we don't have a scale at my house either.

The gunpowder breach will look like a traditional cannon. I can't find the picture I based it off of, but this is the test piece I did in mild.

You might be able to install a nipple in that breech at a 45 and use the very back of the breech to use as the hammer hinge.

All done, going to test it today I hope. I might stick it back in the lathe all together and polish it up again. Anyone have a guess at how much powder to use? I have some blue dot a buddy gave me.

.44 rem mag uses 13.7 grains to push a 240 grain bullet. I'd start with about half of that and work from there.

Disclamer: I am in no way an expert on powder or firearms. Use all loads at your own risk.

bobbo27
12-20-2008, 12:14 PM
I was going to start with 7 grains and see what happens from there, so that kinda backs up my plan. It's too damn cold to test it though, maybe tomorrow.

Finally got to fire this fucker. Took a couple tries to get there, using more powder and double patch. We were using fuses from firecrackers, first the green and then the fast gray ones when we ran out

That's me lighting it the first time, then I had my buddy do it with the fast fuses :grinpimp:

I think it ended up at 28 grains of blue dot, seemed to work well.

Haha yeah that's Cody, he's the funny sounding guy in all the videos. That was the first one that worked, so it was a little exciting.

and I didn't rifle the barrel, it was already rifled when I got it. Really slow twist, I think they're normally 1:40 or something.

Good God man, white powder doesnt belong in a BP armament...just pony up the cash and get a pound of Pyrodex P. It wont be as fussy to light off and the visual effect of the BP cloud is fun-specatular-historically correct...:D :D

Levity aside, nice piece of hardware ya got there.

If you didn't know you can buy rolls of fuse.

I bought some a couple of years ago from a fireworks store. If you don't have a fireworks store near you it looks like you can get some online. Here's one sight I found http://www.fireworks.com/fireworks_gallery/photo.asp?pid=432.

I already have some of this stuff (http://www.cannonfuse.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=2&idproduct=4) on the way, but I got impatient and wanted to see it go boom!

I'm glad I could be an inspiration to someone :D Thats why I made this one - another guy made a simpler one, and I wanted to make mine look more like a cannon. Plus I needed a machining project. Now I have the guy that gave me the barrel doing one with a .800 bore I think it is, THAT should be exiting.

if you're going to stick with some sort of fuse ignition then I would look into model rocket ignitor. Just poke one, in hook up the wires to the battery ... boom!

Myself, if I had all that built I'd switch it over to work with a shotgn primer and a pull cord like a howitzer!!

Oh, and if I have some extra time I am thinking about building another breach, primer and pull cord style. I did look at rocket ignition systems, but I kinda like the authenticity of a fuse. Plus I have ~65 feet on the way.

Yeah, the back side of my office building butts up to the back side of a driving range. When I'm bored, I go for a walk and collect a handfull here - handfull there - been in this building for a few years now, I probably have 5-600 golf balls.

what about gadgets that Cheaper than Dirt or Sportsmans's Guide sells to shoot golf balls out of an AR-15. Could the be the "barrel" and then you have another piece that screws to that as the breech?
