Its probably the law as street legal bikes have steel tanks from the factory but i am sure that will be the least of your problems. I know several people with dualsports that have LARGE plastic tanks and its not an issue for them.

I was just looking into a dual sport kit. See www.bajadesigns.com for dual sport info. Their site says the metal tank is a D.O.T. requirement and most states don't require it so you don't need the metal for an inspection.

i believe the law says locking gas cap for street legal. I have a ktm 620 REXC and i haven't had a problem with the pastic tank and no locking gas cap, but then again i haven't been stoped yet;) . also most turn signals sold with the "baja" kits are not dot legal either. the reason they call them "baja" kits is to get around getting sueed for not technicaly being street leagal in the US. there claim is they sell them so you can ride on the steet in mexico not the US. at least thats what i was told so take it for what it's worth.

i think that is a vented cap not locking.

i've been riding on the street for over 10 years now and the police have never pulled me over for any kind of fix it ticket. i even commuted to work on a dual sport for a year with no mirrors. i've only got pulled over for doing stupid stuff. i think you'll be okay as long as your not wheel standing through town.

before i took my riding test years ago there was a sheet at DMV with the vehicale requirements that i pick-up to check my bike.

the new 640 lc4 has plastic tank locking gas cap and my cousin's KLR has a locking gas cap but i think a steel tank. i think if it comes from the factory street legal it will have one. i don't know for sure if it is dot or just convienience. i heard it's a reqirement but again just rumors. it only maters if you hapen to get pulled over and you happen to get a cop who has a clue.

For it to be sold as a street legal bike from the dealer/manfactur it has to have a steel tank......... BUT when you make a dirt bike streel legal its a custom build and its diffrent rules.
