with the auto you're doing better that if it had the crappy pugeot manual. You might check the t-case, it might be an NP-207 instead of an NP-231.

The 4.2L is a carbuereted motor, so if you want it for crawling you'll have to convert it to propane or fuel injection, or swap a Motorcraft 2100 carb onto it and get decent offroad performance.

It's probably not a great deal for $4k. My $0.02.

I have a 94 with auto, and an 84 CJ7 with an auto. The only way I will buy one is auto. I paid 4500.00 for the yj. The 4.2 is a good motor and the tranny is plenty strong. Good luck. Tim

The 6 cyl engine is the preferred engine. Add a transmission cooler, it will be money well spent. Personally, I would rethink the SOA for a DD. Add a lift and some 33 inch tires..... about all you really need for a DD. However, you maybe happier with 31 inch tires and less lift.... just depends on how much of a dd you want this rig to be and if you want to risk having to deal with a SYE, changing gear ratio, pitman arm, and anyother crap that maybe needed to get decent road manners..... How much and what kind of trails will this rig see? Carb might be an issue.. other than that, it's a great deal at $1,200 plus a little gas to go get it.

it will not see any hard core trails mostly sand hills and some washouts to play in around here my 4runner has 31's on it and goes nearly everywhere i point it i just want it to flex good and run some 32x11.50 tires i gues im going to get it monday i cant find a decent cj around here everyone thinks they are worth a fortune i may skip the lift and get a winch lol i found a soa kit a guy has that was never installed for 100 buks with shocks thats why i was considering it

well without seeing the "kit" I'd say that you'll end up with wayyyy more than $100 in it. SOA lifts it around 5-6" depending on how sagged your stock springs are. You'll need a slip yoke eliminator, extended brake lines, some kind of anti-wrap bar, drop pitman arm, and without high steer you're still likely to have bump steer. Doing a SOA "right" will cost you closer, of not over, $1000. To top it all off you'll be running tires that are bigger than stock YJ axles can handle on a reliable basis. I'd install a used lift kit or just a cheap lift, maybe even a shackle lift but I don't recommend that. I had that once. Since FL is mostly sand though shackles probably won't hurt and you can run 31s easy enough with minor fender flare rubbing. I've got 3.5 inch lift springs I just took off my YJ when i went SOA and I ran 35's on those but I cut the fenders. You can run 33s no problem. If you want to think about getting those springs shoot me a PM or something. I can dig around all my old stuff and piece together a lift kit with all you'd need probably. Keep in mind most kits don't include all the secondary crap you end up needing like pitman arms and you end up with way more in it that you first thought. Good luck and have fun with it.

I have a 84 CJ-7 ,with a 5 speed and a bad left leg . I wish I'd would have gotten a yj and added everything to it instead of a cj.YJ's are so much more civilized ,and the axles suck , just like a CJ ,so they are just about equal in needed upgrades .

And , if you want a CJ front end , just bolt it on ,nearly bolt-on,that's probably what I would have done.

well i finally went and picked up my 87 yj it drove home fine 300 miles the gas gauge is not working right and the valve cover leaks a little but everything else is great no rust on the body but i found some in the drivers floorpan when i pulled the carpet out .should i bother with the stock valve cover or replace it with a aftermarket valve cover and replace the stock air cleaner for a aftermaket . the carb is a new reman job but its hard to start even when warm you gotta pump it a few times and suggestions to adjust it . i wanna gt all these little things fixed then start on the suspension as this thing is a joke off road

how about taking the valve cover off, clean the surfaces and install a new gasket? the carb SUCKS. i recommend cleaning/blowing out the idle pick-up tubes right away. also for offroad performance, you can takle off the front swaybar for better articulation and try taking off both track bars and see how you like that too.

4k is not a deal. YJs of that year had new model issues. No galvanizing, they are rust prone. Rusted out nutserts and shit like that. The drivetrains were usually pretty reliable.

If you are gonna use it for a DD as another guys said, Don't go SOA. SOA done properly is a 1k+ upgrade.

Get some 2.5" lift springs from BDS, set of TJ flares and 33" tires and run it. Good road performance and decent offroad performance. If you really want to bump it up a notch, throw a couple of aussie lockers in, or swap in some 4.10 axles.

With all the knowledge around this place, you can built a very capable fun rig for a reasonably cheap amount of money.

Good luck to you.

total investment so far is 1250 plus 100 bucks in gas to get to huntsville and back home .. so im guessin 1350 for this old jeep isnt too bad considering its only got 150,000 miles and all the tops for it the soft top and bikinni has never been on it .. anyone wanna buy the sparkomatic tape player that came in it ill even throw in the 23channel cb lol

I didn't read too much past the first post. If your truck was worth that little and you traded it straight up then thats pretty good. Everything else I said still stands the same though. :D Grats on the new jeep
