: Engine Help Needed in Puget Sound Area

My youngest son, currently living in Seattle, just had the smog pump go south in his '87 FJ60. The pump apparently seized and the main shaft sheared off. The local repair shop he took it to is insisting on replacing the entire pump even though they can see that it serves no real purpose other than as a belt tension device (he runs an exhaust header rather than the OEM manifold). If I were there, I would simply replace the entire pump with an adjustable pully to provide tension for the belt which also turns the water pump. I guess the other option is to replace the pump with a gutless unit.

Can any Seattle area POR BB member help by directing us to either a shop that knows how to fix this problem without buying a new pump, or provide a source for a gutless replacement pump. This is Tivon's daily drive, so we need a fix soon.

doesnt he have an alternator?? (more of an answeless question :D) but i run a 2f with only one belt (aftermarked ie wider and thicker) and the belt goes around the crankshaft, wp, and alternator and the alternator serves as the tensioner. shouldnt that work?

Jack as you know I own a repair shop, and there are a lot of rules and regs which we, in Tex anyway have to conform to, one is the smog pump.......if I did not know you or your son, I would have to install the pump, and I know it don't do sh**.

One of the TV stations in the DFW area ran a sting at several shops, they only targeted chains and sent undercover reporters around and got the techs to go around emmisions........bad stuff.

Anyway, here might be an option, my local NAPA and O Reilly's offer late model FJ smog pumps, and they are reasonable in price and have a lifetime warranty. Seems as if they are in the $100 range. If nothing else comes to pass, try and have them install one of these....Just tossing options out bud.

-Won't work on a 60, the smog goes around the wp, and crank, the alt goes around the alt PS and crank......

im just putting stuff out there (dont know about 60's but what the heck)...

if the alt and the ps are on one side or opposite sides, would it be possible to space the alternator (for example) and run one long belt around the whole shebang?

and if they are on opposite sides you could do one belt around the crank, wp, and alt and the other belt around the crank, wp and PS? would any of these work?

Thanks, Butch! I appreciate the rules and regulations you professionals have to work under. A replacement pump in the $100 range would be more than acceptable. It is the $600+ pumps that Toyota, Specter or MAF sell that are not acceptable to me, especially since all of the plumbing has largely been removed. The Cruiser is registered in Orygun where we still have no emission requirements.

If we can't find an alternative, would it be possible for you, Butch, to get that NAPA part number? I would really appreciate that.

Nap 51-4779 was the part number for the Napa smog pump on my 1978 FJ40. I think I paid maybe $80 for it a few years back. It will most likely work in an FJ60. I actually had to get a pulley from a 60 to fit it (it has 3 bolts holding the pulley to the pump, whereas the stock 78 had one large key.) HTH

Jack -

Is he in Seattle proper or somewhere (hopefully) North? My in-laws arrived last night, so I am tied up until Saturday AM. Could he limp it up here?

I could get the part info off the LCML to run an idler/tensioner and help him install on Saturday or maybe sooner if he can limp it up here. I can also check with a few folks up here and see if they have a smog pump we could borrow.

I have seen people run a second alt and a pulley with nothing else attached.

I once talked to a outfitter about this JT something or other:D and the pulley on an adjutable slider was a popular replacement for a trail fix.

gets me to thinking about that squeaky smog pulley on my FJ60:eek:

Thanks for all the input and the offer to help from Jim. We decided to just scrap the smog pump and upgrade to a higher output, two-pulley alternator. The shop manager was not particularly pleased when Tivon politely said no thanks to their $800 replacement smog pump and informed him that he would take the cruiser home and replace the alternator:rolleyes:

Not any more. Actually my oldest son graduated from UPS about 4 years ago. Tivon, the youngest son, graduated from Colorado and is not working in Seattle.
