: Saiga 12 problems
james t 11-29-2008, 09:00 PM I just bought on today it was like finding the holy grail, i really thought that i would never own one after the election results. But my problem is I threw some shells in it andwent to empty the magizine and it would not eject the shells all the way i tried adjusting the gas port on the front and it still would not eject them any sugestions?
Loveday 11-29-2008, 09:06 PM What are you using? They like better than 1300 FPS loads.
Clean the thing. Thoroughly. Do not oil the gas block/tube. Screw the gas regulator all the way down, back it off about two turns. Run some 00 buck through it.

does it have a "recoil buffer"?
was the gas plug screwed in all the way and THEN backed off to the desired setting?
What brand ammo?
don't listen to those hacks.
it's ruined. I'll dispose of it for you.

afroman006 11-29-2008, 09:24 PM My Saiga12 will not chamber Federal Premium shells, the bolt just crushes them against the chamber rim. New ones only, old Federal work fine. Other than that, with the gas set correctly it cycles everything.
Loveday 11-29-2008, 09:26 PM Mine does much better with hotter loads. I'm figuring it will eventually wear in and the value packs will work. As it is now, they just hang up in the breech in any of several various forms of failure to cycle.
james t 11-29-2008, 10:43 PM i ran some federal high brass that were hotter loads through it with out failure but it did not like the value pack stuff. So does it just ne some rounds ran through it to kind of loosen things up or do i just continue running the hotter loads in it?
Loveday 11-29-2008, 10:51 PM Most of the S-12's will wear in and handle value packs. There's polishing that can be done, too. Bottom of the bolt, hammer face, etc. Lubricate it well. It'll work in.
Just don't ever forget to turn the regulator down when going from value packs to double ought. The bolt will batter the hell out of the rear trunnion in short order.

Install an AK buffer :D
Loveday 11-30-2008, 07:16 AM Edit: nevermind.

Can you elaborate on this as to why it helps?

"What is a Recoil Buffer?
The continued metal-to-metal hammering and contact that occurs each time your weapon is fired will eventually cause fatigue, stress, and disfigurement to the action parts and could eventually crack the receiver. A recoil buffer is an affordable and easy to install accessory that absorbs much of the impact energy between the bolt-carrier and the rear of the receiver.
Some of the benefits of installing a recoil buffer will be a quieter/smoother action, reduced impact damage to action parts, added control over muzzle bounce, quicker follow-up shots and increased service life of your weapon."
more info on how it works here
http://www.ak-47.net/products/buffers.html
The AK/Valmet Recoil Buffer fits on the recoil spring guide rod of any Kalashnikov style weapon. This includes AKs, Valmets, Galils, and MAK 90s, just to name a few. Installation takes less than a minute and can be done without any special tools. What makes the Kalashnikov action so reliable, is also what causes its inevitable downfall, the violent manner in which it works. Each time you fire your rifle the gas system propels the bolt carrier to the rear very violently, which generates a shock wave that is absorbed by the metal receiver. After a period of time, this repeated pounding causes the action itself to lose its structural integrity. The most notable side effect of this happening is the difficulty you have in controlling the weapon during rapid fire. By installing a Recoil Buffer you totally eliminate the metal to metal impact of the bolt carrier to the receiver and most of the action noise.
TheRedHorseman 11-30-2008, 09:16 AM And it also guarantees that your rifle contacts the rear trunnion, as most AKs dont.
It can also create short stroking, and batter the front trunnion due to higher carrier velocity.

I found with mine a buffer made the stroke too short and did not give positive ejection

Try a "blackjack buffer"
I have no experience with them but that's where some of the stuff I pasted came from
"The development of the BLACKJACK AK-47 recoil buffer came about after I had installed a competitor's recoil buffer in my own AK and subsequently started to experience jams and miss-feeds. I soon realized that their 1/2" thick recoil buffer had altered the cycle stroke too much and that what I needed was an improved recoil buffer that would allow the action to cycle closer to how it was originally designed."

I have read that in several places.

Hey, according to the Tromix website mine was "cobbled together on a kitchen table"
Gozuki 12-01-2008, 08:42 AM Mine was, wasn't yours?

Nope, ammo crate in the garage and then the living room floor
