: Axle ID question

Wanted some help ID'ing a pick-n-pull axle I found.

It's a front D44, roughly 67" wide (no hub/rotor on one side so I'm estimating), spring perches are 31.5" apart, has flat-top knuckles and is 8 lug ( and heavy as hell).

I looked for a BOM number which I couldn't find (was going to xreference to Patooyee's site). As best I can see in the dark, cast in the housing are: 445CF and 2 C36585.

I think it's a late 70's Chevy, but I wanted to figure out the year for sure so I can order parts, etc. I want to chop it 4" so it will line up under my CJ frame and convert to 5 lug.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like an early 70s to '78 3/4 ton Chevy 44 to me. Your description is exactly what my '73 44 was before I cut it down 4".:flipoff2: What year it is really doesn't matter. They all used the same parts (gears, carrier, brakes, etc.) with one exception I can think of. The really early ones had external hubs like a CJ uses. Since you're converting so 5-lug (DON'T DO IT!!!) it doesn't matter what the hubs are. If you do convert the only part you can use outside of the knuckles are the calipers. Everything else will change including the spindles.

Thanks for the reply...

I think you're right. It does not have external hubs. From what I can tell, parts (rotors, calipers, etc) are pretty cheap too :D I'm still undecided on lug as I don't have a rear yet.
