What kit did you start with to get the frame and axles, or is this a piece together deal?

well thanks to a few that added info . i have my new rims, and did they ever turn out sweet!! i used a set of hpi vintage 31mm wide with 6mm offset to start, cut the back bead off and glued it to the front, then cut another bead off another rim and glued it back on the back. now i have a 34mm rim and a sweet offset, no need for wheel spacers now, after there already ordered and in the mail. here are the hummer wheels i was going to use and my new rims. notice the hight difference and the width for sure. it took about 2 hours and some sweet lathe work over at Pat's (Hookeds') house. thanks bud ,not only did they turn out awesome, but at the end they all measured up within a thow.

i have had a couple pm's on what i did with my lug nuts, so ill post some pics.
i had some chunks of old rims from Kevin. he was throwing these beautiful things out, cant believe that, lol you can see from the pics what i did.. first off i took the pieces of rim and ran them on the belt sander as close to the lugs as i could get. then i used side cutters to get closer, then my blade. add a little ca glue and there you go.. and sorry i have no idea what the rims were from.

man that body looks really good. i would like to see that hood functional to provide access to electronics. cutting with sewing thread is easy and takes very little material out. hinges are in the airplane section at your lhs.

the yota axles need to be shimmed. you can feel the ring gear slide into contact with the pinion tilting the axle from side to side. i have a rc4wd rep/dist. about 20 minutes away from me and i am still getting the run around. i have 2 months on the axles and the ring gear is toast. i also have 2 trucks with axial running gear full of a years worth of mud and sand and the internals look almost new.

BIGBIRD

yea i thought about the hood thing to, but im not taking this much further. i like the truck, cause its like mine. and i will drive it like my other crawlers/scalers. if i built a full fender truck i would do the hood, but with this there is not much room. so this one is a no on the hood.

but a YES on the yellow!!

ahhhh more yellow!!!!!

how do you cut with sewing thread, and sucks on the axels, how do you shim them?

here is how i made my tail light lenses.
first i took a broken lens from a vehicle,(dont go out and smash someones lens, they will not be happy)
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/DSC03795.jpg

then i cut the pieces up rough, close to the size i neded.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/DSC03788.jpg

i had a shape drawn in a piece of stirene from when i cut the holes in my back pannel, so i placed it over and used a black sharpy pen and filled it in.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/DSC03789.jpg

then i used a dremmel to trim a little outside the line.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/DSC03792.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/DSC03787.jpg

clean off the lens after the rough cut, use brake clean, works great.
then used sand paper to clean them up and then shape to fit.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/DSC03790.jpg

pop them in and light them up.

well i know i have a load of decal work to get done, but i will have fun doing that part, so i figured i would finish off the grill and headlights. so i thermoformed my own headlight lenses.
first i cut and sanded a block of plywood to size.
placed it into some vice grips. cause i need to pull passed it. you will see in the pictures.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/DSC03964.jpg

then i get a piece of lexan approx 10 inches long and 3 inches wide.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/DSC03965.jpg

get out the heat gun, and heated it till it started to melt/form over the block of wood. then put the heatgun down ,grab the lexan at both ends and pulled down to form my light lens. i grabed the lexan with my fingers, with glove on. and just pressed it closer onto the wood block, just to be sure of fit..

NOT SO GOOD ATTEMPT AT PICTURE DAY!!! destination for pictures was 10 minutes from my house.

no real update/finished pics yet. trying to get some pictures. so i have a 2 hour window to get some great sunny day pictures today. so i decide to drive my 1:1 down the road to instead of using my trailer. like i have been doing for the last few years since the big mods. and it takes time to load and unload and load and unload again at home.
so i started my day out looking like this today. NOTE: NO TRAILER

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/DSC04040.jpg

i had to stop by Kevins house on the way (3 blocks away) to drop off some r/c stuff and borrow his camera. Kev decided to come for the ride.
so as i pull out of his driveway and turn at the stop sign. this is what i saw in my rear view mirror. this is not the actual picture, but you get the massage.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/pf5b_canada_police_rcmp.jpg

licence and regi please!

not a good way to start my 2 hour window to take pics of a truck that hasnt seen pavement for over 5 years. honestly not once have i diven it anywhere. trialer always.
so the officer gets on his radio right away and calls for a traffic officer, i thought he was calling for a "VI" officer.
so as the first officer came to talk to us. i tried to explain to him , that i never drive my truck on the road. and this was the first time in years it has been on pavement. .and this 10 minute drive was only for pictures, for a contest. he didnt care at all. didnt even want to look at my "MINI BIRD" so he says to me. well this is going to cost you a fortune. for your little drive.
i was mad at myself. argh!!!
so the traffic officer showed up. she was nice, said "goodmorning" then proced to tell me that she should pull my plates off this truck and i will never ever be able to insure it ever again, until serious modifactions are done and an inspection. now i was really mad at myself. no proper bumpers, tires stick out. modified suspension , no mud flaps,no front licence plate.. etc. the list was to big.
i then told her the same story to her as i told the first officer. she was a little more understanding, but she said it was totally up to the first officer to decide on what fine to give me.

so we waited patiently.................
as im talking to Kevin. we both said, all this for some pics of a little r/c truck, lol. and we could almost see Kevins driveway still. argh !!!
...........
.............
......
...
..
.
then the first officer came back to my truck. and told me that i was a bad boy.
but today was my lucky day.
he said that im not alloud to insure my truck for the road ever again, but i can get off road insurance only.
and he gave me a ticket for not having a front licence plate. and that was it. wow. what a morning. blew my 2 hour window all to HELL!!.
SO LESSON LEARNED!!! DONT RUSH IT!!! CAUSE IN RICK'S WORLD.....IT WONT HAPPEN!!!
AND ONLY LEAVE THE DRIVEWAY LIKE THIS!!!

great detail. I cant imagine how much time and effort went into that, not to mention how on earth you found the people figures

Really inspires me to build a copy of my 85 4runner now that I built a scale rock buggy.

time to let the RIM/TIRE games begin. i originally built a tire for my scaler to be as close to my 1:1 as possible. nothing at the time on the market was even close. then came ,finially the 1.9 tsl sx swamper. but the rim 1.9 looked bad, for the scale look.
so here is the 1.9 original i made

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6960.jpg

here is the 1.9 sx swamper on my 1.9 rim.
way to mutch rim not enough sidewall. i have 15 inch beadlocks on my 1:1

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6962.jpg

then i ordered a set of 2.2 sx swampers.
no way!!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6963.jpg

so i reduced them to a 1.9 rim.
i think im almost back to my first tires i made. argg. to big to wide and still to much rim.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6965.jpg

so this it what i have now started with.
"BIG PILE "O" TIRES/RIMS"
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6955.jpg

kylecdean

this is the same problem i am facing on my 1:10 scale build i am planning. the 2.2 swampers look good on the rims in pics but the are like 49s to scale and im running 37s on 15 rims. so either my tires are gonna be way too big or I'm not gonna have enough sidewall. Wait! How do you reduce them!?!?!?

BIGBIRD
11-02-2010, 11:46 PM
this is what i starting with:
inspiration from "MADHATTER" on the TLT rims
4 tamiya TLT rims , 4 mini slash rims and tires and 4, 1.9 super swamper sx tsl tires or any 1.9 set of tires of choice.
tools for this will be :
sharp exacto (hobby) knife
scissors
blue ink pen
1.9 touring rim (for measuring)
regular and tire ca glue
side cutters
dremil and some bits
some kind of measuring device, i used a cheap vernier caliper. tape measure will do the trick as well.
hack saw or another way to cut the plastic rim.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6977.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6976.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6978.jpg

first off cut off the outer 2 rings. 1 cut only .approx 7.5mm
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7035.jpg

this will leave you with the outer 2 rings together, this will also be your outer bead to glue your tire into.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7011.jpg

then measure 15mm from the outside of the rim. scribe it or use a felt to draw it. then cut it with the hack saw. the caliper is easy to use. lock it in place and scribe it all the way arround. be sure to roll the rim while cutting the line, just to be sure it is even all the way arround.
do not wreck the piece you just cut off. you need it later.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7037.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7038.jpg

lightly sand up the edges to true them up. i put a piece of sandpaper on my flat bench and rub the rim pieces on it till there all flat.

next i grab the traxxas rim and cut the tire right down the middle.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7020.jpg

then get your knife and cut the tire off the rim, but be careful, you need all of these pieces.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7019.jpg

BIGBIRD
11-02-2010, 11:46 PM
this is what you should be left with.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7021.jpg

then get out your side cutters and cut out the center of the rim.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7023.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7024.jpg

use a dremmel to clean it up.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7026.jpg

next is to cut off the outer 2 rings like i did the TLT rim. approx 5.5 mm
do not worry about cleaning out the bead on this ring. it is hidden.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7027.jpg

this is what i ended up with.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7029.jpg

these are the
pieces i used for the next step.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6982.jpg

i grab the traxxas outer tire 1/2 and lay the 1.9 touring tire on top, centre as best as possible.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6986.jpg

BIGBIRD
11-02-2010, 11:47 PM
get out your blue ink pen and trace the touring rim onto the tire.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6988.jpg

grab the knife or scissors to cut it out carefully.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6989.jpg

this is what i ended up with.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6990.jpg

you can see the touring rim placed over the inner ring i cut out is the same size.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6996.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6995.jpg

and you can also see the touring 1.9 rim will fit n the outer groove of a 1.9 tire. this will all make sence at the end if it hasnt already done so.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6993.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_6997.jpg

next use the 15mm mid section of the TLT rim that was cut out. sand off the burrs and use it to trace the inner ring.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7001.jpg
cut this ring out as well.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7004.jpg

the rubber ring should now fit over the red 15mm ring.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7006.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7007.jpg

BIGBIRD
11-02-2010, 11:48 PM
to check fit, take the rubber ring
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7008.jpg
the outer TLT double ring
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7011.jpg

put them together

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7013.jpg

and drop them into the 1.9 tire. it should look like this. some minor trimming might be needed.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7015.jpg

then gran the traxxas double ring you cut off and place it inside the TLT ring. sand to fit if nec.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7029.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7031.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7032.jpg

now pull the pieces apart, we are ready to glue.

BIGBIRD
11-02-2010, 11:49 PM
so now you can use the black tire ca glue and glue in the rubber ring into the groove of the 1.9 tire.
you need to use the dremil to sand off the traxxas letters and to smoothen out the edges where you glued it.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7010.jpg

this is what my rim looks like. you do not need the piece in the middle for this project. any more . it was just a tool to trace.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7039.jpg

then use the regular plastic cs glue to glue the outer TLT ring and the rest of the rim together.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7040.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7044.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7045.jpg

get the traxxas ring and glut it inside the outer TLT ring now.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7046.jpg
let it dry. paint it.
i used flat black.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7049.jpg
and glue your custom tire in its place. this is what i ended up with. and by far i think it looks the best.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m111/BIG22BIRD/rims1/IMG_7050.jpg
