Some basic info... 91' YJ, 4.0, tf999, D300 w/ 4:1, Chevy 8 lug D44 front, Dodge D60 HD rear stretched to 110" on 38x12.5 TSLs.

I was out this weekend and was trying to climb this waterfall at our local spot and broke the yoke off a front inner Yukon 4340 shaft. I wasnt hammering down nor was I at full turn when it let go. This isnt a typical weak point is it?

It didnt seem to hurt the stub or the superjoint at all. But it did kill 2 U-joint caps.

Any ideas?

That's pretty close to how mine broke last time. Pretty common break point if they're heat treated decent. I was surprised how much abuse it took. I must have gotten a decent yukon shaft. I've seen some 44 yukons break way too easy.

If you look closer you will see that it was cracked a little from the last time or 2 of romping on it.

One thing that they are probably not doing is shot peening or nitriding during manufacture, so cracks will develope on the surface and may be dormant until they fail. Tim
