: YOUR ideal wheelbase
ok, i don't want to start a flame war dammit!
i want opinion's and why :)
front axle is 61 WMS-WMS rear is 59 WMS-WMS 3 5/8bs 37mtr's how long would you make it? BTW if all goes well the overall height will be NO MORE than 6ft :)
elf_cruiser 08-13-2002, 10:37 PM hmm, i would go around 100-102 for 37's. Width i don't see as being an issue. Ideal wheelbase depends more on tire-size, and ground clearance, lift etc. I think that if you are a given width, it doesn't matter how long you are, you will still roll over on sidehills just the same.
Articulated rolls are a different story, though.
badassjeepguy 08-13-2002, 10:49 PM well this is what im currently building.... i will be a tad under 80inches in width.... im shooting for 103 wheelbase..... i will be varying tiresize between 37 and 42's at least untill I make my decision on the size I like...
well i should add that my alternate set of tires are 38.5x14.5's on 15x11 (yes 11) 4in BS wheels :)
badassjeepguy 08-13-2002, 11:00 PM ive seen 37's up to 42's on a 102-3ish range and they work great, in both cases..... seems like the ultimate "allround" setup... ill let you know in a few weeks how i like it.. :D
BadDog 08-13-2002, 11:01 PM After allot of thought and research, based on my intended trails/style and a K30 based buggy on 42s, I decided that my ideal was 110. Short enough for dealing with tight trails without too much multi-point. Not a competition rig so no need for extremes. Long enough for stability, especially in steep climbs. Also long enough to avoid major headaches with drive line angles and such (especially keeping to 4” total lift). Also, it could be done without too much trouble using the K30 chassis. When all was said and done, I wound up with 112. Turned out that getting the extra 2" was more work than I felt it was worth. :D
BadDog 08-13-2002, 11:02 PM Forgot one other thing, long enough to potentially seat 5-6 adults and carry some gear!
desertCJ 08-13-2002, 11:14 PM I wheel mostly with guys that have CJ-5s so they are at like 84"-85" and they think I've got a long wheel base at 96" I want a little longer, like 100"-105". If your wheelin on tight trials then front wheel drive and cutting breaks are very usefull, especially when you get over 100".:skull:

i should of added that i am runnin an atlas and cutting/line locs on my brakes
i will have line lock's and cutting brakes also :) and should only weigh 2500 :)
zuk stuff is kewl :)
Rudezuk 08-13-2002, 11:34 PM Fatkid is about 94" That looked like it worked pretty damn well!
Im going to stretch mine from 82 out to about 90-92..
BadDog 08-13-2002, 11:44 PM Yeah, twin-stick and tractor brakes are on my "to do" list too...

i'm running 106 right now and LOVE it, but cornering is a mo fo in event's, and being 83 1/2 outside dones't help much either :(
i'm really leaning for 100-102 (link issues if any shorter than 95) and should be under 80 outside to outside on teh swampers :)

im guessing around 3000 to 3200lbs for my "what used to be" tj
Chris Geiger 08-14-2002, 12:18 AM I have tried a few different wheelbases, and settled on 102.5 This seems to me to be the best all around length.

id agree that seems to be the concensus when i was inquirin
CHOKEu 08-14-2002, 12:55 AM 104" is what I want and I'm 77" wide. I don't compete, I just want the nicer ride and storage room!:D
monzter 08-14-2002, 02:14 AM 152" maybe not Ideal, but I deal with it.

Damn what are you building? Rock crawling shopping cart???? Helium in the tires???
High5 08-14-2002, 03:00 AM i agree with 100-102 for 37's.
my cj5 is at 100 now. i built it this way when i was still running 35's. it was great. at 38.5's it was still good but now running 42's it still works great but when i build the fj40 in the yard i will probably go to about 105" with the 42's.
High5 08-14-2002, 03:04 AM i agree with 100-102 for 37's.
i would also agree, and say around the 100-105 mark. One thing no one seemed to address was the fact that you want to keep the over all height down to around 6ft, assuming the difference would be in the lenght of the coils, leafs etc this is also going to effect your center height, which in turn will effect your center of gravity. say you are on a 102 wheel base and measure 36 from the ground to the frame it is going to be more stable than 90 and 36 to the frame, and have a better clearance height than a 105. If you see what i am getting at, you probably thought of all of that already but there needs to be some relationship between the lenght and the height of the frame vs the tyre size. think about it.

bigdude 08-14-2002, 04:48 AM I'm at 100" with 38" TSLs (really 37s) Wish it was a tad longer.
BillaVista 08-14-2002, 05:18 AM The Wolf is 105" and works very well at that, with twin transfer cases and 4spd manual.

do you have four wheel steering?
Cajun 08-14-2002, 05:37 AM I'm shooting for 108"--110" on my CJ thing eventually. I'm using 'Mog axles and an auto so I don't think anything smaller then that is even possible. It'll have 4 wheel steer to help with the tight spots, however.
BnTMike 08-14-2002, 08:26 AM I love being at 110"'s with a 2K rig ... with turning brakes you can compete and run in boulder fields cause it slides over everything and then can climb and drop off like a mad dog... 102 is short for some of the big ledged trails of today.. and I run 37 mtrs....
Mike-
350 Samurai 08-14-2002, 08:40 AM Most of the guys running competitions with 37s are in the 102" to 108" range. I would guess that they have done their homework and found what works best. I would just follow their lead.
And about the 36" to the frame rail, that sounds awful tall, seems like your COG would be way high. Your frame would be even with the top of your tires.
I'm running 44s with 115" and 29" to the frame and high centering has not been a problem.

Yes, my shopping cart wieghs 2340lbs. with a 94" Wheel base and it does kinda well.:)
nuttzack 08-14-2002, 09:29 AM If I was gonna do mine all over again I would set the wb at 100", but thats with 37's. Didn't you say you were gonna make the wb changable.

;) the more i think about it, what a pain in the ass... my toy work's perfect @ 106 and is stable as all hell! but the turning sucks... the adjustable thing is just downright going to be expensive to do!

Toddy 08-14-2002, 03:52 PM So say you are planning on running rockwells and atleast 44s with coilovers what would you say a good all around wheelbase would be. This is what I got and I am thinking about building my own frame so no big deal to do any length.

fcfred 08-14-2002, 04:59 PM 113 with 38's in the works, may be a bit long, but we'll see. if so I'll figure out rear steer.
