I'm building a '77 Intl. Terra, built 392, T-19 4 spd, D300, SOA,
full width D60/14 bolt, 4.56's, detroit rear, thinking 36's??

this will be an occasional Daily driver/tow rig,
with an occasional play in the dirt.

what do ya think of mile gear/tire combo??
am I geared to low for a DD/tow rig??
(I can always get the 4:1 for the D300)
OR should I look at an OD auto trans??

What are your thoughts??
Just in the planning stages right now.

I Already have the Terra w/T19/D300 & full width axles (4.56/det. rear) I plan to build the motor next year but I am also considering an OD slush box.

Thoughts/Opinions/what R U running??

Thanx!, Darren Y

Scout, SOA and tow-rig don't go well together. I'd either run stiff (new) springs or invest in some MAJOR swaybars for the rear. Being full width will help a great deal on stability, but with only 118" wheel base, you need all the help you can get.

DO NOT USE A SLUSHBOX.

They suck for towing, suck for wheeling, suck for daily driving, and a built 392 will eat anything short of an Allison for LUNCH!!!

I'm currently building a Terra (77) for similar duty, maybe a little more tow- oriented.

I'm currently running 304/18/20/ 3.54's. (and 30 inch rubber :barf: )

Plan is no susp. lift, extra main leaf (4 corners), 33's or 35's, 38" tubs in back, 1 inch body lift and sawzall front.

4.27's and dual detroits, or detroit front/mini spool back.

BUILT (by John Comer) 392 (I'm dreaming here ;))

T-19 close and 300.

I like the Terra idea but that is a pretty short w/b. As far as the gear v/s tire diameter it depends on the power range of the cam in the 392. I put a new 460 in my f350 and took the 33-12.5s off thinking I will have tons of torque. I ended up pulling hills slower than with the 351m and 33s because of the 4.10 gears. I acctually need the taller tires or higher gears(3.73) to put the rpm range back in the right spot for the speed It hits at. I would assume with 36s if the power range is 2200 to 3000 will work great for max torque at 55 to 60mph.My max torque now ends at 50mph.:( so I will be going with the tires instead of gears.

So would 33-35/4.10's be a better choice than 4.56/36-37??
I guess I'm looking for am rpm ~2500-2700 at hwy speed.
& last for the rear (14 bolt) Gov-Lok or Detroit??

Well I would definitely go detroit, and talk to a shop that installs gears, and they can dial in your gear ratio to tire size to power band for all the stuff you have. I would personally go no larger than the 36 tsl, for sidewall wable problems

Not so sure I'll run swampers, this thing will see more Hwy. miles.
I'm thinking about going with the 4.10's & 35's???
We'll see when I get to that point.
