: Bleeding Power Steering

So whats the lo-down on bleeding it? I've never had to do one before. This is on my '78 Bronco FYI. I've been turning lock to lock (with weight off tires and engine off) and have been getting a lot of large air bubbles. After a bit of that, I'd start the engine and do the same. It would suck all the fluid out of the resivoir and start sucking air once I got to the right side lock.

When turned all the way to the left, the resivoir would fill completely up. When I turn the engine off, the fluid would keep rising and overflow quite a bit. It has gotten substantially better though. Before, I couldn't turn the tires at all no matter how hard I yanked on the steering wheel (38's), but now I can use one hand. The pump does make quite a bit of noise (low fluid?), and it still overflows everytime I shut the engine off (its never done it while running to my knowledge). Could it be air-locked?

So does anyone know the proper way to do this? Tips? Link?

This method worked for me.

Thanks for the link. I never thought about disconnecting the draglink...

I got discouraged on bleeding my PS box on my 69 Bronco (has a 78-79 Bronco box though). I just kept topping off the resevoir and turning the wheels lock to lock. Sometimes i would jack the front end up in the air, turn on the motor and turn just start turning the steering wheel. Eventually it bled out, but it did take forever.

I've been using this trick for 20 years (Ford Tech) Putting a vacuum on the system works great. You need a extra cap or a big rubber stopper, put a hole in it for a vacuum hose. You can use a hand vacuum pump or a port off the engine. Just hook everything up and let it run for 15-20 minutes while turnning the steering wheel back and forth, works great!

X2 This is the same thing my buddy did with his 78 bronco. It took forever, but finally it got all the air out. I never had this problem with my chevy or dodge.

I fear that once I do get it all bled, that the lines will rupture soon anyways  My Bronco has a 460 in it (wider), so the PS lines that come out of the pump are hitting/rubbing the steering box, and the PS pump is adjusted as far to the center as it will go on the bracket.

Oh well. Hopefully I can finish up bleeding it this weekend, start/finish cutting the front fenders, and start building a dashboard for it to hold my gauges :grinpimp:

you think your taking a long time to bleed it now? try adding in a 2x8" ram for hydro assist. it takes alot longer. :D
