ppl use crossover steering to run bigger lifts and help bumpsteer? right? well this setup here looks like it would have bumpsteer<IMG width=640 height=480 SRC="http://www.pirate4x4.com/ubb/uploads/solid 2.jpg">
not to be picking on this rig,,but it seems like it would have bumpsteer.this is the same setup(springs, brackets, etc. that im going to use) he has a 6 in dropped pitman arm and a 1in raised steering arm. is this too much of a angle?

Looks to me like the drag link is going to hit the sring under compression.

And yes there will be bump steer art that angle.

Holy crap how much lift does that thing have????? with the draglink mounted there + 1" block + 6" drop draglink = I'm guessing at least 10-11" of compinsation in the steering. That thing must have over 16" lift at least. It looks like the steering arm isnt the greatest design and doesnt provide the proper clearance for the springs (you sure its got a 1" block in there??) Also if your getting that much angle consider less lift or dropping the steering box down

its not my rig,but a fellow member of the pirate board's friends. it is a 89 chevy solid axle conversion using 8in superlift springs and the ORU solid axle conversion kit. i am using the same kit and same springs. he has a 1in stepped up arm and a 6in pitman arm. i was wanting some better angles for my setup and need advice on how to acheive this. but 8in springs + ORU kit = 10in of lift.

OK its a chevy so its not designed for crossover, thats why it looks like it has 16" of lift. I would say drop the steering box and brace the frame if at all possible. Also you can get a bigger steering arm block, or look for an arm that is raised more then that one.

Hey what's up man...My roomate was going to do a bent arm but is was more $$$, he was VERY frustrated by this point, & he really needed to get it drivable cause I bought a house and we had to move. He finished it the weekend before we moved. I would look to using a bent arm if you could. However, you don't notice the bumpsteer cause the whole truck bounces all over the road.

Also, the drag won't hit the spring cause the tires & fender wells won't let it stuff that far.

joel,i went and bought a digi camera. but i took it back cause the pics were blurry. (or i was that drunk) i think that im not going to even use a dropped pitman arm. im going to build a bent draglink and attach it where the drivers side inner tie rod went on the old IFS setup. i think this will work cause i saw one the other day like this. it had stock springs and no lift,,but it seemed to work. Nat'l tire called today and said that my mickey classic IIs were on backorder,so i opted for 15X12 eagle 589s.ill try to get a camera tommrow.you will see the pics first,ok?

better use some tough material then. My bent draglink started to bend more on its own! So I went a different route for now till I get my hydro steer done...

A bent drag link will do absolutely nothing to reduce or eliminate bump steer. You could have a curly straw lookin drag link if you want, it still won't help. What matters is the relative position of the ends.

A bent drag link can help the angles of the hiems or tie rod ends, and cross member clearance. Just keep in mind that a bent tube is significanly weaker than a straight one, meaning it has to be much beefier.

He is absolutely RIGHT.

A bent drag link will do NOTHING to reduce/eliminate bump steer.

The end of the steering arm needs to be closer to horizontal w/ the end of the pitman arm... horizontal as in at the same height as each other, not as compared to the drag link itself, or however it may be bent.

The big steering arm block that ORU sells would help reduce the height difference and therefore help reduce bumpsteer.

you can see in there the lifted steering block.. I would try one of those first, because it looks like to me that will solve your problem. I wish I could find a better pic.. but you get the idea. garrett
