: Feelin' like a newbie...Question
RockRover 08-14-2002, 11:14 AM Alright...I'm sitting in my office, hung-over from the late night/early morning fabrication effort and I'm trying to remember the first gear ratio of the ZF...And the low range of the LT230...And for the life of me I can't remember...
Can anyone help a blistered brained, tired old man?

road1will 08-14-2002, 11:17 AM i think the ZF is 3.05:1 and the LT230 is def. 3.3:1
fawking newbies!!! :flipoff2:  :D
My specs disagree. Fawking newbie "rock gods" :flipoff2:
Transmission************** ZF 4HP22 4 speed auto
Transmission Ratios*** 2.48, 1.48, 1.00, 0.73:1. Reverse: 2.09:1
LT230 High 1.22ish (1.003, 1.410, and 1.667)
Low 3.321 (other option is the RC low maxidrive set)

Ouch.....
RockRover 08-14-2002, 01:41 PM Thanks guy's...I had a feeling that 3.05 was a little low for the ZF...I was hoping though!
Now then...That gives me a 48.26 compound low with 5.86 gears in the axles...Multiply by 2.1 for the torque converter and I end up with 101 final...That's 20-22% lower than I was with 4.7's
Now I went from a 35" SSR to a 42" tire...That's a 16% increase in diameter.
So ultimately I'm 4-6% lower than I was before...With about 1000lbs more unsrung weight! :flipoff2: Time for a new lump!
(yes I figured all this out before I started, but the list is sooooo damn slow I thought I'd through this out for discussion). :flipoff2:

road1will 08-14-2002, 01:57 PM no shit? thats kinda gay. most 4spd autos have around a 3:1 first. :rainbow:
land rover
RockRover 08-14-2002, 02:02 PM Like what? The TH300 has a nice low first, but the 400 doesn't...What other auto are you thinking of?

those are 3spd autos.
im thinking 4L60E, 700R4, etc
700R4s (aka 4l60 as of 1990ish) have IDENTICAL ratios to that of a ZF4HP22s???? (am I wrong?)
Not trying to pick on you today BTW. :)
Now the 4L60E is slightly lower version of the GM transmission. Gears on that are 3.06, 1.62, and 3rd of 1.1

Now the 4l80E is what I was thinking of.....DAMN.
The gear ratios on that are the same as the Rover trans. Info on the conversion can be found here.

Doug,
I think you should just run it with what you got for a while and see how it goes. Your gearing wont be as bad as you think cause IMO you will air down a 42in tyre proportiontely more than a 35. So your 42 ends up like a 38 and the 35 end up at 33.
What i think you should do is throw in a maxi 4.3 gear set (you should do this when you do the part time conv) this will get you fairly low. And then maybe some 7.17 in the diffs if its still bad. This will get you really low at about 154:1. Then swap the motor if you need more power.

Exactly what I was thinking my friend! Run it, break it...Then decide!
