I have a Chevy 350 with an edelbrock carb/intake, and ebay block hugger headers. Right now it dumps out into a 2" flange, straight to the ground. I am going to run a pipe from each header 90 degrees, to a glasspack, and then a short piece of tail pipe that will exit right through the bedside.
Question is, what size glasspack do I want? (please, no bashing glasspacks, I know how they sound) I don't want it to be raspy. Id rather it be deep. So I think I want a longer one. Pep Boys down the street has 2", 2.25", and 2.5" pipe diameters and about 30" lengths. Hopefully it wont be TOO quiet, as I do want a powerfull sound.
Anyways, what size pipes should I get? 2.5" is generally the size most people use with a mild V8 right? But since the pipe coming off my headers is 2", would it hurt to go with 2"? Or should I put an adapter on it and get 2.5" pipes? It wont be very long at all, just from the headers right out the bed side behind the cab.

I would say 2 1/4" pipe. That's what I used on all the small blocks I've owned and it had plenty of power. Since the motor is basically stock internally (assuming) you really don't need anything bigger. I ran flowmaster 40 series and it had a nice rumble but when you got on it, it sounded mean. As for glasspack length, I would say at least 18" if not 24". I personally don't care for them but to each their own. Hope this helps some.

If you put a few bends in after the glasspack it won't be all that bad. Even a turndown right off of the glass pack kills a lot of the noise that you don't like. Even a turbo muffler is just as cheap and will help you there too.
I had glasspacks on mine with turndowns about a foot after the glasspack. Mild built 350.
Here is a link a video of it if you care to listen. Its rather windy, but it doesn't have that glasspack sound if you ask me, well not too much anyway.

Glasspacks sound like shit. IMHO....
The longer the length of the muffler, the less like shit it will sound.
If your header collectors are 2 inch, just get 2 inch pipes, no point in getting adapters or paying the extra money. The most flow the pipe is going to have is through that 2 inch collector.

Thanks for the advice. That's what I was looking to hear :D

x2, anything larger will not affect flow. spend a bit for "turbo" or
flowmaster mufflers. you might also make friends at a small
muffler shop. the one near me sometimes take off relatively
new performance mufflers, and might give or sell cheap.
( never hurts to have a friend at a muffler shop.

I guess I shouldn't rag on the glass packs as much as I did, they are cheap and affordable.
thats a plus.
The fit easily into tight spaces. Another plus.
I guess that I am not so much about the "loud annoying" sound as I am about quality sound.
And after making a 1000 miles plus cross country trip 4 years ago with a big block screaming through Flowmaster 40 series mufflers the whole trip, I probably will find something a little more quiet for a future muffler.
