My freind just called me and says that his rear end is getting hot and boiling dif fluid out the vent. My first thing to check would be to drain the fluid with a strainer and look at it. Any other suggestions??? Or ideas of what you think it might be. Its a '94 with 33's. Stock gears. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would have to ask first if he has just put in a new ring gear.Might be set up too tight.check your backlash.oil needs to get in between the pinion teeth and the ring gear teeth to properly cool and lubricate..if not try checking your lube level or when it was changed last.vescosity breakdown does create heat..hope this helps

Well they are the stock gears in there. We just changed the fluid and found not abnormal amount of metal or anywater. Its still getting hot and make a sound that sounds you are dragging a chain down the road.

when does it make noise? coasting or driving. There are only a few things that can cause a rearend to overheat with used gears, to much pinion bearing preload, or check and make sure the pinion nut didn't back off, which would take all up your backlash. Just my 2 cents
