: 72' Scout II - O.B.U.S

So Here we go - I bought a 72' scout, bone stock, 304,auto and 31's. Got it running and traded it to Theycallmefudd. This is his build and such. The plan is Waggy front springs with 63" chevy rears, dana 60 and 14 bolt, with 38.5 Super Swamper SX's. Drivetrain is what we pulled from an 80's ramcharger. 440,727, and we retained the t-case from the scout, D20. Are the guys running full widths making their own shackles for the front or are they buying an offset shackle ? Pic's will be up tonight when I get home from work. Flame away

Thanks for the wish list:shaking: Post up in 10 years when you start this amazing build with your offset shackles. I can tell its gonna be full of cutting edge tech:flipoff2:

Cutting edge ? you mean we'll have to trim the fenders ? yea, we planned on it, I figure we'll take it for a shake down run and then throw some rockwells under it so we don't grendade axle shafts.

So, your taking the Dodge drive train, specifically the 727, and swapping over the tail shaft & adapter from the Scout 727 so you can run the 440 & Dana 20?

Why not keep the Dodge 727 as is & run a Dodge NP205?

5x Stronger & same gear ratio....

We used the front spring hangers from DIY4X off of the front of the frame and hung the shackles through the frame. For now they are just spaced with washers, but that shouldn't be perminent. The springs are 4" waggy springs from superlift. Out back we knocked off the old hangers and used some spring hangers I had from a chev on the front. Out back we used a piece of 4x4 box and notched it around the frame, then put the shackle hangers off of it, still need to get the shackles for this, then we can set it down, check the shackle angle and weld it all in. We also pulled the stock tank, so we can push the 14 bolt back farther and will run a fuel cell in the back of the cab. That's where it's at so far, should have some more done this weekend, hopefully it'll be rolled out of the shop so the shop can get a good cleaning.

Here is the front end in with the 38.5's, look pretty good, and it's not too super wide

And what size rear shocks are guys running with the 63" rear springs ?? hopefully we can roll it out of the garage today... maybe

got a little done this weekend - mounted the rear front spring hangers which are from a chevy c-10 that i had laying around, put the 63's in and it ended up pushing the axle back about 2 inches. I had to take off before i could get some pics of the rear shackle hanger in place, but i had a good reason. I'll get a couple more tonight....

All right already I'll but the scout seat back in, I was just trying to stir some shit, I figured you guys would flame the Hell out of me my first build and all! I don't want to upset the IH gods, so the seat will go back in (It has some good patina anyway).
I do have a problem I put in the rear springs last night (63in chevy 1/2) mounted them outboard the frame rail, but it seems almost to flexy, no shocks yet, im sure not helping but 4 strong pushes and that bitch is doing the low-rider bounce, I've been doing some searches but I'm computer illiterate??? Any Ideas for a newb? add-a-leaf? 3/4 springs?

There are several variations of the 64" springs.... I've seen them with 2, 3 and 4 leaves (not counting the overload). How many leaves are in your packs? I'm going to try to a set of the 4 leaf packs under mine, but I'm also contemplating switching to a 56" packs simply because the 64's won't allow me to move the axle back as far as I'd like to.

As far as being stuck to his "anus" he is 6ft 11in + 345 lbs (he does the light work) I couldn't even reach his butt if he was on his knees......

The rear spring hanger/shackle mount/ cross member is about 4" from the end of the frame. and it is notched about 1.5" deep. If you retain the stock fuel tank( Fudd replaced his with a fuel cell in the back), you can always just run the mount on each of the frame sides with out spanning the frame like a cross member, kind of like a chevy shackle flip.

Haven't touched the rigs at all other than moving them (to keep the city and landlord offa my back) and cranking them up every month or so to burn off the moisture and charge the batts.

Gonna be moving all the rigs and all the parts 'n' crap to my Dad's place in Sebastopol (after moving my folks to their new place in Santa Rosa). What fun. At least I'll be able to work on the rigs at the 'new' place once all the moving's done. I'll be bugging you for IH Scout/truck leftovers again soon... :grinpimp:

The shackle angle looks fine, and the overloads will keep the axle rap a bay too. I saw that cross member and thought where is the gas tank going.

I ended up used 56" leafs with the 4" offset off in the stock locations but under the frame and they fit 38" tires.

Edit.. look in the FAQ under springs I think there some pic's of a couple different Scouts

--- I haven't been able to work on it in the last week, had to get some firewood and get the house ready for the mother in law to come into town.... the plan is to through the motor and add- a leaf in on Christmas eve to Christmas day hopefully then I can cut out the rear wheel wells once it a proper ride height..... As far as the tank, I figured a fuel cell inside the cab will be ok, but I got a sweet "fuel + tool" farmers style transfer box with a tool box on top, I'm going to give that a shot before I invest in a fuel cell...... unless Santy Clause brings me one but I'm not going to hold my breath....

Maybe your steering box is still at the shop. Talk to the new owners. It's quite possible the dang thing's still sitting on the shelf in pieces, right where you saw it last. The new owners probably have no clue who it belongs to. Call them up and describe the box and where you saw it last. You never know. I'm all done being butt hurt over the stearing box (chalk that one up in the hindsight file), So I have no new pictures but I did get my garage all cleaned out over Christmas so Me an Tiny are going to be putting the motor back in between tonight and tomarrow, so I will have him take some pictures and I'll try to have him post them up soon.....
Seeing all your builds has got me 2 steps in front of my self, The other night I was about to take the plasma to it, and rip the doors and top off and become a "hardcore" scouter...... but my wife told me I was a dumb shit (thats how she calms me down when I get worked up like that)... probably a good thing the next morning I got up and it was so cold my pussy hurt, and I realized it was probably the margaritas talking, and I don't think I'm a billy-bad-ass :mr-t:enough to drive that baby with no doors or top --- oh well

I know everyone is worried about my current stearing box delema, but I have good news, the local pick n pull has a genuine treasure for me so Wendsday (1/2 off day, and day off) I will be there early to extract my treasure, hopefully be for the rest of the scout fanatics get to it(yea right). Over the weekend I did get the 440 in, I was pretty pleased untill I whent to bolt up the torque converter and the holes didn't match up to my flexplate--- so now the bitch has to come back out...... I cleaned the front framerails down bare and am looking at doing some sort of brace for the stearing box.... I would have pictures but Tinys pussy hurt so he went sledding or some b.s.
I will try to get Tiny over to take some more pictures to get posted up .......

I haven't gotten very far on my rig, but here's a few pics of my '77 Scout II Tera. . .

The Reverse Shackle I did in the front with the un-lifted version of the 44044 Waggy Springs:

I've upgraded axles as well, but yet to install:

Are you going to trim some of the access fang from those spring hangers?

I'll also run some Dom tube or similar to help cross brace them.

Thanks for the advice, MochaMike. . .

Right now the fangs are as long as they are, is because I want to retain the strength in the metal encase I decide to lower the hole. Right now I'm planning on angling the fangs forward a little bit to decrease the angle of the shackles, which would mean that I might have to drill new holes.

Photoshoped picture of what I'll do with the fangs:
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj193/thetrucks/Project%20Terror/ideas/Suspension/AngleChange.jpg

I've also been thinking about changing the shackles to some boomerang shackles, like these:

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj193/thetrucks/Project%20Terror/ideas/Suspension/RE2705.jpg

I won't know until I get the 350 motor, the 700R4 Tranny, Blackbox, and Ford Np205 in there for weight. Right now all of that stuff is outside of the Scout.

:grinpimp:Right now the welds aren't even burnt in, just tacked in place, I also plan on doing some strength upgrades after I get it running. . . When I started this build I had a good amount of cash flow, so I was able to get some expensive upgrades, like a frond Ford High Pinion Dana 60. Since then I've lost my job so I'm focusing on getting the vehicle running. After its up and running I'll work on adding strength for when I wheel, as well as doing more cosmetic mods. . . I might make a build thread on here, once I feel its pirate worthy:grinpimp:

:evil:Web wheeling is free, buying parts and doing projects costs money.
