Did they ever come with a D20 (IH or otherwise) or were they all divorced units?

Some of the very early Scout II's had a BW Auto w/ dana 20.

The factory auto in Scout 800's was a BW w/ married D20 as well.

BW Trans was definitely in the 71 model. I just yanked one out. One quick way to tell is the bolt on bell housing. Warner gear is also stamped on the main body of the trans. I will be dissecting one shortly...

T-case is a D20 on mine. Yes it is married to the tranny.

Let me know how far you have to take it apart to get the rear output shaft out. Looking to swap from 4wd divorced to 4wd married. The BG241 will be coming out and either a 304 or 345 with BW auto will go in. (I have a '66 2wd Trav for parts, but the slop in the drivetrain causing spring hop from the divorced tcase is VERY annoying!) The '68 will be much nicer to play with. Discovered the easy way to fix the stock front axle is to swap it out for the one from my '73 J4000. Seems to be a bolt in fix for the steering and driveline angle at the same time!

So what exactly are you trying to do????????? You plan on swapping in a 304 with BW auto out of a 2wd Travelall into a 68? If so you want to marry a dana 20 to the 2wd BW and swap in the output shaft from a 4wd. BW?? So where are you gonna get the output shaft and houseing from??

Hopefully a local junkyard that has several IHs. The '66 304 is different from the later models apparently (crank flange). The other option is a 345 with Clark 5 speed from my '71 Loadstar 1800. (It has a Brownie 3 speed over/under that could be real fun if the length will work)

I don't know about the crank flange being dif. , but if that is tha case couldn't you just use the same flywheel and swap in the 4wd BW. Seems alot simpler than what you are talking about.

It's simpler to change the whole trans (known good working) than to swap an output shaft and tailcone?

Great God and Baby Jesus, yes. Much simpler. If you tear open that tranny, you better know REAL well where to get some replacement parts. BW tranny parts aren't easy to find, unless you know where to look.

If you think it is a case of just unbolting the tailcone and the output shaft falling out you are sadly mistaken.

I think you are talking about the spacer on the crank. The spacer is different when the BW tranny is used. BW tranny has a shorter input shaft than the 727 or vice versa. Can't remember right off the top of my head, but you will have to get a different spacer, torque converter, and some various and sundry other pieces. It is not simple, like Lev1a said...:shaking:

That's what I was trying to find out. When I was a trans tech (Mopar/Jeep/etc 727s, 9XX and powerglides) I didn't have any BWs to play with. I know at least one trans had the rear shaft that pulled out (it had a snapring like a CV axle) so you could change lengths of output. I was hoping the BW was like that.
Oh, and I do know where to get the parts from (most are FMX related) but I was hoping for a shortcut.

I couldn't find any manuals for the trans alone. I may have to break down and get the 71 Scout manual in hopes that it has some info. I will let you know about the snap ring in a couple of days. I have some plans to tear it down in the coming week.

Took mine apart today. Belt was in multiple pieces, but here are some pictures of the guts, sans belt pieces.

When you pull the shaft (on the left in first pic) let me know if just a snap ring holds it in at the bearing or if you have to pull it out through the front of the case..
