This is the begining of my color change to my cj. Product is U-POL Raptor tintable shake & shoot liner. Cell phone pics suck but the stuff is cool.:D

Awesome! I lined my interior with it(plain black, not the tintable stuff) and really like it.

Something interesting I found is that when mixing the hardener into the bottles, if you fill it nearly to the top w/ hardener(a bit more than what is specified in the instructions), it will come out and dry faster and harder. More plasticky feeling than rubber. I really liked the finish I got. Post more pics when you're done:)

Thanks for the tip / I'll give it a shot if theres room. You have to add 3 oz. of base tint to the can along with the hardner.

so how does this stuff hold up? As in scratches, flaking or rubbing against trees.

so how does this stuff hold up? As in scratches, flaking or rubbing against trees.

The stuff seems to resist normal wear and tear really well. I have floormats up front because I don't feel like touching it up every year or whatever. In the rear I've hauled my mutt around a few times(110lb husky-malemute mix) and his nails didn't do much of anything to the liner.

My tool bag/cooler/camping gear/etc don't leave marks.

Only thing that gouged the liner is when I bought my rear tire carrier/bumper, which are heavy as hell and have a few sharp edges to them. I took a few spots about 1-2in long to metal when loading/unloading the stuff. I just put some touch-up paint in there so it's not noticable. If I were to do it again I'd just spray a few more coats in the back area.

I did my whole jeep with that over last winter and wheeled it hard. That stuff held up great. I tinted it 06 Jeep green "electric lime green" then did the inside black. It took 3 cases to do the whole thing. Yours looks good mine turned alot of heads when getting gas and shit.

I just went wheelin with a guy that had this liner on his old FJ inside and out. He slipped into a rock wall while going through a v-notch and solidly planted his front fender and the area above his rear tire against the rocks. After he drove out there were dents but the liner showed no damage at all. I was thoroughly amazed. That was the first time I've seen liner on the outside of a rig. It looks like it would be harder to wash, being all bumpy and stuff.
He had a good laugh when I told him it didn't look very aerodynamic.

I used that same kit to do mine last summer. Very easy, comes with the spray gun as well. I did my interior only, same color as the outside. I'm very pleased with how it came out. Yours looks awesome, maybe I should have done the whole Jeep, my painting sucks. :D http://www.marylandjeepclub.org/phpBB3/download/file.php?id=7262&t=1 http://www.marylandjeepclub.org/phpBB3/download/file.php?id=7263&t=1

You will hate it in about 1-2 years. Mine looked great at first-I used tint base and UV protection. It will start to break down, fade and crack. I did the interior and exterior of a truck and tried many different bands. Spray on coating just is not made for exteriors...if will end up looking like a bad cat toy-give it time. It is also is a sponge for dirt and anything else. You can pressure wash the truck and mold will still make it under and in the crevises.

Mine was awesome looking at first and just went to crap over time.

Durabak, herculiner...rolled, sprayed....it did not matter.

On a side note-I like your rig...just don't agree with the coating

I had my previous jeep sprayed with Line-X brand. I did the Hard top, whole interior, firewall and complete underside. It lasted 6 years with no problem. I did notice some fading and cracking in the really exposed areas. I am wanting to spray a tan color liner in my current build and was wondering how U-Pol compares to Line-x. I was also considering spraying the hard top with the same tan color.
We have sprayed a phostphate tank at our shop with this thermal black ??? I bet that could be sprayed on the floor to prevent engine heat from coming in the jeep. The tank we have is heated to 140° and you can keep your hand on the painted area but not even touch the unpainted area, it is pretty amazing. however I cannot remember what it was. I will try to get that information and pass it on.

Any updates on the durability/ fading?

I'm seriously considering this stuff, but the comments about it cracking/holding mold etc, have me a touch worried.

Try speed liner next time.UV stable.I used it on my deck 6 years ago with no fading or cracking ,and you can spray it in a $40 dry wall texture gun.

mcgyver, great looking setup. Thanks for sharing, I've been deliberating brands, DIY vs Line-x, exterior or not. I'm leaning towards this upol stuff.

Nothing out of a can, put on with a brush and roller is ever going to compare with a real spray on liner. Liners and foam insulation uses two chemicals that actually form a plastic when mixed. A 4" grinder is about the only way to remove it. All that d-i-y shit looks great for while and because you want it to be stronger than paint you might even convince yourself that it is. The toughest paint ive ever used was Ditzler DP 40 and i hear even that has been watered down by the enviromentalists. I will promise you this , that shit will be the toughest when you want to get rid of it. my 2 cents

I'm not sure your two cents adds up...
This thread seems to be in mention of u-pol which is a "spray-on" bed liner.

Used U-Pol myself on recommendation of a very reputable paint and body guy.
Excellent product and has held up with no issues. Pics in my sig link.:smokin:

It's kind of like comparing powder coat to Por 15. I like and use Por 15 and think its tougher than Rust-o-leum but, I doubt its even as tough as the old DP40. Btw, the equipment used to apply real bed liner cost more than 20K our rig is 10 yrs old and it was $35,000 back then. It uses heated hoses and a hydraulic proportioner that sprays at about 2500psi. Just the gun was $1500. That stuff is no where near the same but in the end it really doesnt matter to me. Hope it works well for you. ~ Huck

Hucky is right. I have sprayed hot applyed polyurathane for 14 years now. I always say that comparing do it your self bedliner to a pro installed bedliner is like comparing spray chrome to real chrome plating. Try it if you want. You will learn alot the hard way, then its hell to remove.

Got the upol stuff on my rigs inner tub and it worked great, I think it has been on there for about 2 years, next time I would prolly use 2 cases on the inner tub to get it nice and thick. I have beat on it too, I have thrown logs and rocks into the back of the jeep and it hasnt even scratched. When I get a truck and if it dosent have a bed liner I will use this on it, I will also put it on my rockers of the truck.
