: Rock Slider Install
GotIt 12-08-2008, 09:05 PM DandC finally (6 months later!) shipped my rocker guards for my Scout II and I am looking to weld them to the frame.
My concern is that there is so much distance from the frame to the end of the rocker, and only 2 points of contact to the frame, that when I drop on it hard, it may put to much stress on the frame over time. I was thinking of adding support to the frame where the rockers attach and am curious to know what success, or failure, others have had with their rig - any recommendations?
MCMAIN0121 12-08-2008, 09:50 PM I would definitely recomend welding some gussets at the end of the extensions from the slider to the frame, possibly even on both sides. You might even consider adding a couple more connecting points in addition to whats there already. You could even fab something to reinforce the pieces that connect the slider to the frame, by adding a short piece of tubing to connect it to the floorpan too, about midway between the slider and frame. That make sense? That would help make it more tough for hardcore use. Good luck with those, when youre doing the install you should take photos to chronicle the job. Im going to be fabbing some of my own in the near future, so hopefully yours take off some of the pressure of fabbing from scratch.
I end up welding some plates on the end of the 2x2 and bolting them through the frame.
If I were to do it over I would take some 2.5x2.5 trailer hitch stock and cut some 4" long pieces to slide over the 2x2. Still weld a plate the 2.5x2.5" and that gets welded to the frame. drill a hole and weld a nut on the 2.5 stock and use a bolt to hold the slider in place. This allows you to remove them if needed. Just be sure everything is in place before welding as you want the sliders up close to the bottom and depending if you have a body lift or not might angle up a bit from the frame.
79scout-too 12-09-2008, 09:53 AM Here is what I did...
1/4" plate welded to the frame. 6" ( 1/4" wall) tube welded to that. With a gusset on top.
Mine are more for steps rather than true sliders.

MCMAIN0121 12-09-2008, 10:05 AM The mounts at the frame look good, 79Scout. What are you using for the steps?
79scout-too 12-09-2008, 12:37 PM I ordered the RS01-H 60" Rock sliders from these guys:
http://www.4xinnovations.com/pages/guarding/sliders.htm
less than half the price that other companies want. Good quality product and fit nicely along the rockers of my Scout II.
I got some tubing to slide into the tubing welded to the frame (the tubing supplied by 4xinnovations is cut for a Tacoma and won't work) and will bolt them together.
I went el cheapo and just used some 2x5x.188 rectangle tubing. But then later added some 1 1/4 pipe to make them wider as I was rubbing my doors and I need a nice step :homer:
binderbound 12-10-2008, 01:43 AM I went with 2x4x.25 tube. I wanted to be able to drop on them hard. Did hard enough at naches this year to break one of my frame tubes off of the rocker. Rockers still holding up good.
How far away are you mounting them from the body? If its super close, then I wouldn't worry about extra frame support since the body will absorb any rocker deflection. If your a decent welder, you won't fatigue the frame much with the slight movement the rockers might have. But, if the rockers are a ways away from the body, gusset away!

I thought you were more of a drift net kind of guy...
On a serious factual note: I did meet said GF on 2 occasions. A) She was real. B) She was too good for Dan. C) She probably wasn't his type anyway. :flipoff2:
bassdude 12-10-2008, 04:34 PM maybe she was used to the kilbasa and threw back the Vienna?

Now what about those sliders:)
Sounds like Dan is stepping up to fill HOS shoes.
As for sliders, you want to get something thicker than 1/8 wall tubing as it will just get bent. I've wack mine a few time and just damaged the paint.

Jacked indeed!
I think I got it figured out and will post with pictures when installed.
