New shop is almost done and wondering how I should run electric...or a new service. I have not called on my electrical friends or looked into the books yet but was just wondering if this was basically even possible? I really don't need any more than 75/100 amps at the new building...

1. Can I do another subpanel?
2. If so-what about sizing in general

Although the building labeled GARAGE has a large 150 amp panel-I never use more than 30 amps...lots of outlets but I am only one person....so maybe i could downsize the main there?

As long as you dont run all your load at the same time you should be good to go.

I have a two hundred amp main service The trailer has one 100 amp panel I also in the shop have another 100 amp sub panel.

Along with another two hundred amp panel.

In my main box i have 3 one hundred amp breakers I have never had any problems Since it is just me the Air compressor and welder or plasma is the only really heavy loads:D

Just put a 100A sub panel in the shop, fed from a 100A Breaker in the "Garage" panel.

As long as no breaker "down stream" is bigger than the breakers "up stream" your good to go.

Sure, you could some way pull say 90A out at the shop, then another 70A in the garage some way... but then you'd just pop the garage main.

As for wire from the garage to shop... I'd have to look it up tomorrow. Over head or underground? You want copper or Aluminum? Direct bury or Conduit? (I prefer copper and conduit, but thats just the way I was raised, nothing really wrong with Direct AL.)

I already have my underground conduit run-just have to pull wire. The other subpanel is the underground aluminum type that I ran in the same type hard grey conduit.

I'd run a 100 A breaker from the garage panel. You may not need it power wise, but it will cover you in case you need it. I'd also go with a full sized 20 space box. We went with a 6 space on Doc's and by the time we were done, it was already close on space.

If I am in the area, I can swing by and take a look. USMCDoc14 can vouch for my work. :D They're transitioning me to working on the Peninsula, so I am over here every day Monday through Friday, and Saturday and Sunday, when on call.

I have a 100amp sub-panel in my shop, fed by a 100amp from the house and 2/2/2/4 in conduit.

I also have another "100 amp" sub-panel in the shop, slaved from the first 100-amper, with a 60amp breaker - I ran out of slots in the fullsize box before I was done.

I ran a lot of circuits though. :D

I used the sub-panel to group some high-power/low use items together, like the powder coat oven I rarely use, and the compressor, and the fridge, and a few never-been-used-yet 20amp 220 outlets I've put around the shop.

Aside from where it's located, it would've been a good place to put an extra welder outlet, too.

One run of 6g wire to the panel, serving 3 or 4 big draw items that I can more or less only use one at a time, vs making 3 or 4 runs of 6g - and I'd still only be using one of the tools at a time anyhow. ;)
