: F-Toy 508 build thread

O.K. First off my name is Shawn Moody, I'm from Charleston S.C. I picked up F-Toy #508 from my buddy "Trollporter" who was planning on throwing some rockwells under it with a 350/465/205 combo. He decided to go a different direction and put his old Blazer back together and sold it to me. He originally bought the F-Toy from "Superpile" on here who had it just about finished and quit on it due to some sponsor issues. I am planning on going with an all yota drive train from my 90 truggy. It is four linked so it wont be legal for comps. So.....here goes nothing.

Alright here is 508 as I received it from Troy.

Took the the old truck down and had it weighed before starting the tear down. BTW pay no attention to the dates on the pics. Camera battery died and I forgot to program the date.

...I got SN 508 rollin yesterday (looks sick on 42 iroks on the h1 wheels) and as soon as I get the DUI distrubter it will be running on propane, just gotta get the seats and floor in, dshafts, ram, etc. See you at the Jellico event to cheer you and the other ftoys on.

Wow! Crazy to think it was nearing completion, torn apart, almost went over a Chevy drivetrain on Rocks, then back closer to Plan A.

Thanks for starting a build thread--looking forward to seeing where you go with it. Your 90 truggy was fairly light!!

Yeah here is a pick from when superpile had it. Man they did strip it down to bare bones. Not trying to junk your build thread, I figure this is part of the history of the chassis :)

Cool. Nice to see this come out of hiding. Welcome!

Ya'll have heard of "Cow tipping" how about "Cab tipping". Bet that was fun.:D

Keep the info and pics coming.

You need to reconsider the links. The leafs are almost as good and you'll have a rig that can legally compete and one that will be appealing to more people should you ever decide to sell. Just my .02.

I agree with Jon. A comp legal F-Toy will sell faster and for the same money as a linked F-Toy. They don't perform that much better after you link them either.
Keep the build thread going. You got a good start.

I see where you are coming from on this and I have thought about going back to leafs but I must say that the four link works AMAZING! Especially in a rock garden type situation. Plus no axle wrap. I love it.

The only negative about the four link is that I have quite a bit of body roll while turning. It kinda irritates me sometimes, but damn it works in the rocks!

Use the correct springs, proper shackle angle, and an anti-wrap bar and you will be equally amazed. Have you wheeled with anyone in a comp Ftoy?

When and where were these pics actually taken cuz I don't know anywhere around here where I could have been wearing shorts and a t-shirt right now? You must be way south?

Charleston, S.C. Mind you these pics were from September. It was like 72 degrees one day this week though!

I have seen 507 up the Gulches a couple times. Haven't actually wheeled "with" him though.

I also have several obstacles on my property in chapin. always good for a little night wheelin' with a few cool ones.

Go hang out with Wes for a day before you go much further with your build. His rig works well and is a good example of the amount of torture that a comp ready Ftoy will endure.:D

We want you to be legal to compete even if you don't think you want to right now.:D

That's our personal adgenda but I understand not wanting to cut off the links. Keep it going you will love it either way.

I wouldn't sweat the leaf spring and resale value(that 4 link works)...it's not that hard to cut off some link tabs, and weld in the leaf hangers(later)...but, you already knew that bro! That shit looks good Moody!:smokin:

Awful kind of you Wes I may just have to take you up on that offer one day. Chapin is great little town. My wife, son, and I enjoy camping over at Dreher Island state park. Maybe I could ride up there one weekend and get a closer look at your F-Toy.

Not hard to weld on a couple spring hangers and just leave your link subframe in there. Use one of your upper mounts to attach a traction bar!

Try it both ways--you're moving along quickly--you've got time! ha ha!

What springs you got up front? Looks like you got WAY more flex in rear than in front. Thinking if those are the same leafs you had in the cab truck you may have to soften them up a little since you don't have near the weight up front now.

those upper links were mounted to the old crossmember(which is gone) so those would be temporary. we wouldn't run no stuff like that and expect it to hold up,C'mon.

Not sure what I'm doing in the front yet. Probably something like what Hendrix sells I guess. I know the bolts are too short, I swiped them from work and have been meaning to bring some longer ones home and swap them out.:D

Yeah, those springs are temporary. They are actually a set of superlift springs I had laying around. I have been bending up a set of springs every third or fourth trip (need bumpstops). Been through a set of Marlins and a set of Trail-Gears in the last little while. Always seem to bend up the passenger side too. Hell for a while there I was running one Marlin and one Trailgear. Now they are all used up.

However, I would expect WAY more flex out of a four link w/coils than from a set of leafs wouldn't you?

I would search for some semblance of balance between the front and rear. I have seen lots of cool leaf sprung rigs go links in the rear and actually wheel worse than before. 5" TG's need a couple leafs removed and bumpstops properly placed to function properly for any length of time. The best way to figure this stuff out is get it together and wheel it. It will let you know what needs to be changed.:D

Just curious. I used no relays and ate a lot of toggles until recently. The toggles i found at Home Depot have a seal at the base of the "bat". Very similar to the red seal on yours. They have held up much better. I am sure they would do even better with a relay.
