Trans shifter just flops around and twist and turns.......

In the "book" it says you need a special tool to get the shifter out. Any truth to that?

I'm guessing there must be a roll-pin or rod that broke inside the ball and lets the shifter just swivel

any comments?

If you take the boots off, so you can access the top, it's easy to take the shfter out to see whats going on. You won't know till ya look

I can unbolt the retaining plate but can't get the shifter to lift out.
don't know what tranny it is but it is an 82 pu

you can remove the shifter from the mounting plate.

i'm not sure how to explain it but i'll try.
there is a spherical plate that holds the shifter in the mounting plate that can be removed. you twist it there is like a cam lock detent that releases the plate when you turn it. i used a couple of screw drivers. i read in the manuel that there is some sort of tool for it too, but i'm cheap so i managed with screw drivers and plyers. hope it helps.:)

it is spring loaded,push down and twist.i found some teflon seals the same size as the hole and put one in,then put my shifter back in and it has been working fine...

just turn the shifter back and forth while pulling up and the dowels should run through some slots on the sides of the shifter. after that go to toyota and buy a shifter rebuild kit should be 11 bucks comes with 2 peices and i'm sure you can figure out the rest. after wards change the fluid in the trans because all the plastic peices are in there( probably won't hurt much though)

wow that link just helped me out a crapload, been dinkin with it trying to get it to pull out for what seems to be an hour:shaking:. Man this search button has saved my life a million times!


O ya it shere is nice when all of a sudden you cant shift when your in the middle of a road closed and theres a tree in front of you that you cant plow or get over. And then somehow get it turned around and go out of there 3rd low 4wheel, and all you can smell is clutch burning up.
O ya and did i mention its in the middle of a swamp and we just got 5 inches of rain this weekend!!!
