: Toyota Overheating

I have a bit of a problem with a recent Toyota purchase. I bought an 85 Toyota 4x4 pickup with a blown head gasket. I replaced the head gasket, got the head milled, the block was straight no warpage. I did everything right, put it back together, timed it in plugged up all my emissions etc. I started the truck up and it idles great but once I start driving it after a while it overheats. However, the temperature sensor doesn't work so my temperature guage doesn't work so you can't really tell when the motor is getting hot until you smell it. My thermostat is good , replaced it, cooling system good, flows well no cracks, all hoses good no cracks there either. Also at the valve cover, the front pcv sprays oil like you wouldn't believe, This one hooks up to the air cleaner so there is no valve that goes in there just the rubber hose that connects it up. Also, on acceleration it bogs a bit and sputters then it evens out. I think that this could be due to the gas in the tank because I don't know how long the truck has been sitting, but I know it has been a while. Any help would be great, thankyou.

sometimes you can tell the gas is bad by the smell. it smells like turpintine.

did you get the head presure tested?

the blown head gasket could have been caused by a previous overheating problem. Plugged radiators are a very common cause of the symptoms you describe in that year Toy. they will idle fine, but overheat when driven. The oil coming out of the valve cover is caused by blowby. If the truck sat a long time with a blown head gasket, the cylinders and rings may have been damaged by rust. A leakdown test can verify the condition of the the rings and cylinders.

I was having a similar problem the other week. Went ahead and had the radiator flushed but i think my really problem was the radiator cap. It is only like $5 for a new one. Worth a shot if you havent tried that.
