im in iraq without access to my truck, i was wondering what trans i might have, it's a 1980 K5 Blazer, 5.7 350, manual, the gears are low,1,2,3,and R, I was also wondering is that considered the 3 or 4 speed?

SM465, It is commonly refered to as a four speed. Older trucks have different shift knobs with 1,2,3,4,R

When I bought a new knob for mine, the dealer referred to it as a 3 speed with granny low:confused:

It is....

Whether or not you use that low gear on regular basis or not... it is still there. It's a 4 spd. trans. Get over it.

465 has four forward gears and one reverse. Or is "granny low" (L) not a gear?

:shaking:

My grandpas truck has L,1,2,3,4,OD,R. I guess that parts guy would consider it a four speed.

People are idiots.

Gear number 1 is still and always going to be gear number 1. Whether a manufacturer decides to mark it as "L" or a "1" does not negate the fact that 1st gear is still 1st gear.

Thats probably beause there were 2 4-speeds available in his book. The easiest way for a parts monkey to tell them apart is to say 3 speed with granny low, or 4 speed.

both are in-fact............4 speeds.

the shift knob looked like
1 3
2 4
or
L 3
2 4

i have the one with the L on my 75 sm465.

4 speed or 4 speed direct drive, Ive herd them refered to both ways but never a 3 speed with granny low.

I got what I think is a SM420 but cant i.d. it yet the gear pattern is:
1 2 4
R 3 5
