: Locking Hub options for 35 spline Dana 60
pcorssmit 09-07-2001, 09:30 AM I'm getting ready to do the 35 spline stub shafts in my front 60 (Chevy), and was wondering what options there are for locking hubs. The 2 I know of are having the Spicers broached out (and no warranty), and the Warn Premiums (w/warranty). I was planning on going with the Warns, but some have told me that they come with a blocker ring (which can be removed), and a set screw. I was also told that they don't "click" into position when engaged. What I'm wondering is if there is a way to get them without the set screw, and with a detent. I really don't want to have to carry a hex key around with me just to work the hubs. If I can't buy them this way, can they be modified, and will I have warranty issues?
Thanks,
Pete
PTO DAVE 09-07-2001, 10:54 AM Go with the Spicer! Been running these with 35 spline outers for about 10 years, work great.Just last Sunday I SAW these guys shove 3/8 fuel line inside of of the Warns just to get them to work. It was funny,it worked though. That little set screw is a pain in the butt, everyone forgets to bring allen wrenchs. The Spicers are getting hard to find, not to long ago I saw a new set,the guy wanted $300.
pcorssmit 09-07-2001, 11:29 AM I've been running the Spicers, but when the 30 spline stub blew it took out the dial on one hub.

As far as I found out when I did my 35 spline upgrade, The 35 spline Warn hubs are designed for a rear lockout conversion and their concern when building this hub, was that while someone was driving, if the hub could disengage, then a accident could occur. So they built a lock Set screw in place to prevent this from happening.
I don't believe you can get the hubs without the set screw.
I have a pair of good 30 spline spicer hubs that I was told would cost $100/ea to have them cut to 35 spline.

pcorssmit 09-07-2001, 11:50 AM For that much I could buy the Warns and get a warrantee.

PTO DAVE 09-07-2001, 04:21 PM I had my spicer hub gears re-broached,cost $50 for two. You can buy just the plastic knob. Thats whats cool about the spicer, when you blow stub only plastic knob breaks, not whole hub (Warn).
pcorssmit 09-07-2001, 04:45 PM Who broached your hubs?
I'm not sure of the relative strength of the Spicers vs. the Warns. One of my complaints (actually the only one) about the Spicers is how hard they are to unlock, vs. the Warns where you are just releasing tension on a spring. However, given my financial status (broke), it may be a good alternative if its that cheap. Who sells the Spicer dials?

PTO DAVE 09-07-2001, 07:33 PM A friend of mine here in L.A. did the hub gears. If you want I will give you his number.I have a couple of new knobs around here, I will see if I can get #s.
JEEPRZ 09-08-2001, 06:14 AM I have those Warn hubs on my rear axle, since I flat tow. I got a single allen wrench, bend a loop into the end, and keep it on my keychain...that way its always with me when i need it. The blocker ring is easy to remove
fj40charles 09-08-2001, 06:59 AM I've heard the Warn hubs are a real pain to engage. A friend of mine has some and he said he would get his vehicle rolling in 4 low and jump out and turn the knob to lock the hubs.

Only if you leave the blocker ring in place, if you take it out they are just like any other warn hub.
pcorssmit 09-08-2001, 11:28 AM Thats how I have to unlock my Spicers a lot of times. Put it in 2wd, get it rolling, then jump out and hope the truck stays on the road. Kind of a pain.

JEEPRZ 09-09-2001, 07:34 AM That blocker ring sucks... I usually have no problem with the first hub, but the second ones a bitch. I ususally can get it to line up by twistin the drive shaft back and forth with my foot. Apparantly there is just enough play in the detroit to line the splines up in the hub...next time those hubs are off, that blocker is goin in the trash
