: 97 454-hates to start when warm.
strangler 12-12-2008, 06:18 AM My truck starts fine when its cold, and runs fine when its cold all the way through normal operating temp, but if I shut it off and try to restart it within 15 or 20 minutes it runs way too righ. Belching smoke, idleing at 1800 but unable to put in gear without stalling, rich. If I let it idle high until it drops into closed loop, its back to running fine.
What tells the computer to utilize open loop heavy enrichment even if the engine is warm enough to be happy with closed loop? IAS? Engine temp sensor? I have not checked the resistance on any of the sensors yet, its 15* outside.
86k30 12-12-2008, 11:22 AM father in law has a very similar problem with his 98 7.4 one ton. cranks forever after it has sit for 20 minutes, and when it finnaly does start, runs like its loaded up with fuel. I'm still looking for the answer myself.
Odin K30 12-12-2008, 11:27 AM Im sure the MIL is on.
What codes are stored.

Probably because he was cranking the shit out of it. Shit man, I'm from WV and even I put 2 and 2 together. :flipoff2:

Light has been on for 5 years since I removed the cat and rear o2, but it has never had any trouble starting before. Can I view any codes myself or do I need to got to Autozone and have them lie to me?
You may want to check fuel pressure after you shut the engine off. If you're losing pressure and you're spitting out black smoke you're losing your pressure into the cylinders.
I had a 98 K2500 with the 7.4 and the same issue. Turns out it was the fuel pressure regulator. Not a difficult fix...
Hope this helps
strangler 12-12-2008, 08:08 PM Not a bad idea. Do you happen to remember what type of pressure the system is supposed to be under while not running? I understand that if its X and then 1 minute later its 0 I have an issue, but I was just wondering what normal is.
Odin K30 12-12-2008, 08:24 PM Your rig is OBDII so you need a generic scanner (available for about $75) to read the codes.
Dont throw parts at it until you read the trouble codes.
toastyyosty 12-12-2008, 08:46 PM you might wanna try looking at the EGR Valve, the rubber diaphram could be torn or If it's a lunar style a little peice of carbon can keep the valve open causing excesive cranks when warm and a real rough idle, running real rich will also happen... if it's a high milage truck you probably have a good amount of carbon build up inside the upper plentum (intake).. try that if you havn't already gotten a code reader..
Good luck
Chiong 12-13-2008, 01:26 AM The fuel injectors are probably leaking. They crap out and after sitting for a while start leaking and fool the engine leaning it out I think... making it hard to start.

wtf are you talking about. low fuel pressure would create a lean condition not a rich one:shaking:
check the MIL light and go from there. that truck should have 45-60psi of fuel pressure depending.
strangler - I can't remember what the pressure should be while running or what it should stay at after you shut the engine off.
hick - did i say low pressure? I said losing pressure, there's a difference... if its losing pressure that fuel has to go somewhere
strangler 12-14-2008, 11:43 AM NAPA just scanned it for me. Showing an inop Engine Temp Sensor- $13. I'm headed out to swap it out right now.
strangler 12-14-2008, 02:50 PM 3 minute swap. Runs great! Thanks guys.
Odin K30 12-14-2008, 05:19 PM Cool.
Goes to show on an EFI rig ALWAYS read codes first.
